Verneri Pohjola (born December 23, 1977 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish jazz trumpeter.

Live and act

The son of bassist Pekka Pohjola studied at the Jazz and Pop Conservatory and the Örebro Music School in Helsinki. From 1999 he studied jazz music at the Sibelius Academy . Here he met the pianist Tuomo Prättälä , the bassist Antti Lötjönen and the drummer Olavi Louhivuori , with whom he founded the Ilmiliekki Quartet in 2002 . Their debut album March of the Alpha Males was released in 2004, followed by Take It With Me in 2006 .

Pohjola is also a member of the band Quintessence , the band of Iro Haarla , the ensemble Suhkan Uhka by Antti Hytti and Jone Takamäki , the UMO Jazz Orchestra and the post-rock band Silvio , where he plays drums. With his brother Ilmari he played for the first time on the album Views (2001) by his father Pekka Pohjola. He also worked with Adam Bałdych and Kari Sál .

Prizes and awards

His quartet was awarded the Teosto Prize of the Finnish Composers' Association, and Pohjola was named Artist of the Year at the Pori Jazz Festival . In 2004 the quartet was invited to an official reception by the Finnish President Tarja Halonen on the occasion of the Finnish Independence Day. In 2009 Pohjola received a Jazz Emma for his album Aurora .
