Pertti "Pepa" Päivinen (born June 2, 1955 ) is a Finnish jazz musician ( baritone , bass , tenor , soprano saxophone , clarinet , bass clarinet , flute , composition ).

Live and act

Päivinen began taking flute lessons from Seppo "Baron" Paakkunainen at the age of twelve . From 1975 he studied at the Helsinki Pop & Jazz Conservatory with Juhani Aaltonen and Kai Backlund . He first played with Sami Hurmerinta, the singer Tapani Kansa and Arto Sotavalta. In 1979 he became a member of Jukka Tolonen's band , with whom he toured Europe. In 1984 Edward Vesala brought him to his group Sound & Fury (which he also belonged to between 1989 and 1997) for a year . He has been a member of the UMO Jazz Orchestra since 1985 . In 1988 he also went on a concert tour with Anthony Braxton's Braxtonia . In 1998 he founded his own trio, from which a quartet developed. He also plays in Samuli Mikkonen's band . He also recorded with Iro Haarla , Henrik Otto Donner and the band Wolf Larsen ( Viapori ).

Prizes and awards

Päivinen received the Pekka Pöyry Award in 1984. In 1999 he was awarded a Jazz Emma for his album Umpsukkelis and in 2000 he received the Georgie Award of the Finnish Jazz Federation.
