Samuli Mikkonen

Samuli Mikkonen (born March 24, 1973 in Jyväskylä ) is a Finnish jazz pianist and composer.

Mikkonen had piano and violin lessons from the age of seven. He studied at the Sibelius Academy and became known as a jazz musician in the bands of Jari Perkiömäki , Jouni Järvelä and Mika Mylläri in the mid-1990s . In 1996 he founded the Samuli Mikkonen Trio with bassist Ulf Krokfors and Mika Kallio . With this line-up he recorded his debut album Korpea kuunnellessa in 1998 .

The ensemble was expanded to a quartet by Sonny Heinilä in 2001 ; In 2002 Pepa Päivinen , Jorma Tapio and Juhani Aaltonen and Pentti Lahti were added. With this formation, Mikkonen recorded the album Samuli Mikkonen & 7 HENKEÄ in 2003 , after which the group was named. 2001 Sakari Kukko recorded the album Virret - spirituals from the North with the Mikkonen Trio ; Another production followed in 2003.

Another trio that goes back to a concert tour through Norway, Denmark and Sweden in 1998 was formed by Mikkonen with Anders Jormin and Audun Kleive . The album KOM Live was released with the group in 2000 . At the Polar Jazz 2000 Festival in London he performed with Kenny Wheeler , Jorma Ojanperä and Markku Ounaskari .

Mikkonen was or is also a member of the bands of Jouni Järvelä (since 1993), Jari Perkiömäki (1995–98), Markus Ketola (1997–2001), Pekka Pylkkänen (since 1999), Esa Pietilä (1999–2001), Mikko Innanen (2001) and Lasse Lindgren (since 2003). In 2010 he released the album Kuára: Psalms and Folk Songs on ECM Records in a trio with Per Jørgensen and Markku Ounaskari .

In addition to instrumental jazz pieces, Mikkonen also composed electroacoustic and computer music primarily for three groups: the band Wäinämoiset from his hometown , the Jouni Järvelä Group and Pekka Pylkkänens Pekka´s Tube Factory , with which he also toured China, Argentina and Peru. In 1999 he composed the electro-acoustic sound for Mika Waltari's play Akhnaton, auringosta syntynyt .
