Markus Ketola

Markus Ketola (born April 25, 1968 ) is a Finnish jazz musician ( drums , composition )

Ketola, who in addition to his main instrument also studied the piano and classical percussion , initially worked in different fields before he could concentrate on his work as a jazz musician. From 1886 he was a theater musician in Kokkola . In 1993 he became a member of the UMO Jazz Orchestra while still completing his master's degree at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, which he completed in 1998 (doctorate in 2007).

The debut album of his ensemble Tila was declared "Album of the Year" in 1998 by the Helsingin Sanomat newspaper . He also composed for the UMO Jazz Orchestra and commissioned works for the European Broadcasting Union and the Finnish Broadcasting Company Yleisradio . The Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra performed his composition Puhdas päämäärä in 2005. He also played in the experimental cross-over band Free Okapi and performed Eero Hämeenniemi's composition for string quartet and percussion with the Kerava Quartet . As a drummer he also appeared in the EBU Big Band, the NDR Big Band , the Bohuslån Big Band and the Norrbotten Big Band when it was led by Tim Hagans . He also accompanied accordionists Maria Kalaniemi ( Ahma ), Verneri Pohjola ( Agatha ) and also Eero Hämeenniemi in his band Nada , where he contributed South Indian rhythms .

Prizes and awards

In 1999 Ketola received a Finnish jazz Emma for his album Tila . In 2012 he was awarded the Yrjö Prize at the Finnish Jazz Festival in Joensuu .
