UMO Jazz Orchestra

The UMO Jazz Orchestra is a Finnish Big Band of the Modern Jazz , which has existed since the 1975th It was founded by the musicians Heikki Sarmanto and Esko Linnavalli and initially consisted of the musicians of the Finnish Radio Dance Orchestra.

UMO is the abbreviation for Uuden Musiikin Orkesteri (Orchestra of New Music). Since 1984 UMO has been funded as a permanent orchestra of professional musicians by the Finnish Radio , the Finnish Ministry of Culture and the City of Helsinki . To that extent it functions like a national Finnish jazz big band; it plays around 80 concerts a year.

The UMO Jazz Orchestra has performed in various European countries as well as North America. The orchestra has played with soloists such as Thad Jones , Mel Lewis , Dizzy Gillespie , Muhal Richard Abrams , McCoy Tyner , Michael Brecker , John Scofield , Tomasz Stańko , Gregory Porter , Roberta Gambarini , Antti Sarpila and Gustavo Bergalli . Heikki Sarmanto, Gil Evans , Maria Schneider , Pekka Pohjola , Eero Koivistoinen , Pekka Toivanen and Iro Haarla wrote for the 16-strong formation ; the ensemble's repertoire extends to modern creative . The orchestra has presented numerous recordings that have been published by labels such as Slam, Naxos Jazz , Leo and A-Records. The orchestra was directed by Esko Linnavalli until 1991; he was followed by various personalities such as Heikki Sarmanto and Markku Johansson. Currently the orchestra is conducted collectively.
