Live and act

Pickett, who first grew up in Berkeley , is largely self-taught as an instrumentalist . After leaving high school there, he only had a few lessons with Bert Wilson before developing his own approach. Between 1972 and 1981 he was a member of the Tower of Power wind group , which was called to numerous plate meetings. He also arranged for, for example, Elton John , Rod Stewart , David Bowie , Talking Heads and Laurie Anderson . Since 1985 he has been the musical director of the studio band on the television show Saturday Night Live . He not only composed for his own band, the Borneo Horns , but also for other ensembles such as the New Century Saxophone Quartet or the UMO Jazz Orchestra , but also for theater and film.

Pickett was appointed to New York University to teach jazz saxophone as a professor, although he is not considered a jazz player "in the conventional sense" ( Allmusic ). He received a Bessy Award ( New York Dance and Performance Award ).
