Pekka Toivanen

Pekka Toivanen (born September 27, 1961 ) is a Finnish jazz musician ( tenor saxophone , clarinet , composition ).

Live and act

Toivanen initially had classical piano training from the age of ten; at the age of twelve he received clarinet lessons. From the 1980s he played in the Finnish jazz scene a. a. in the Kulttus Big Band and the Brushane Big Band . In 1983 he was one of the first students in the jazz department of the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki.

In 1987 he founded his own quartet; In 1988 his debut album Stick Around (Kompass Records) was released. He was awarded by the Finnish Jazz Federation in 1987; In 1988 he won second place at the Karlovy Vary Jazz Festival competition .

From the 1990s Toivanen belonged to the Espoo Big Band and the UMO Jazz Orchestra , for which he also wrote compositions such as Breakfast for UMO in 1991 . He also toured in Finland with his quartet and the singer Saara Soisalo. In 1994 he presented his second album She Didn't Like the Wallpaper (Love / Johanna), on which the trio Töykeät participated, and in 2006 the production Arctic Brambles . In the following years he worked a. a. also with Oiling Boiling , Wade Mikkola and as a director for regional orchestras and as a composer. He can also be heard on albums by Marit Ja Mikot and Kai Hyttinen .
