Antti Juhani Sarpila (born June 11, 1964 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish musician ( clarinet , tenor saxophone ) of traditional jazz .

Live and act

Sarpila received his first instrumental lessons from his father, the amateur musician Kari Sarpila, who also played the tenor saxophone and clarinet and who founded Pori Jazz . In the 1980s he repeatedly took lessons from Bob Wilber when he was in Finland; he initially oriented his game to Benny Goodman . He formed his own swing band in 1982. In 1988 he performed as part of the show Tribute to Benny Goodman at Carnegie Hall ; he made several tours across the United States. He also played with musicians like Doc Cheatham , Wild Bill Davison , Vic Dickenson , Panama Francis , Frank Wess , Milt Hinton , Peanuts Hucko , Thad Jones , Zoot Sims , Dick Wellstood , Trummy Young , Buddy DeFranco and Wynton Marsalis . He was also able to perform with the Count Basie Orchestra , the Metropole Orkest , the Wolverines Jazz Band of Bern , the Dutch Swing College Band and the Swedish Swing Society around Lars Erstrand . He has released numerous albums on his own label.

Since 2006 he toured Germany with Engelbert Wrobel and Frank Roberscheuten as Three Tenors of Swing . In a quartet with Lars Erstrand , Mark Shane and Björn Sjödin , he recorded the albums A Sailboat in the Moonlight (2004) and We've Got a Heartful of Music (2004). Together with the Stokstad / Jensen Trad.Band he presented himself at the 2006 Oslo Jazz Festival .

In 1997 he received the Yrjö Prize of the Finnish Jazz Federation.
