Christian Peter "Chris" Hopkins (born April 18, 1972 in Princeton ) is an American jazz musician ( piano , also alto saxophone ) who has dedicated himself to traditional jazz .

Life

Hopkins, who has lived in Germany since childhood, received classical music training from the age of six, first on the harpsichord , then on the piano. At the age of 13 he discovered his passion for jazz. His piano style is rooted in the tradition of the stride and swing pianists. Since 1996 Chris Hopkins is solid as a pianist member of the Swing Society to Engelbert Wrobel . In 1998 he founded the quartet Echoes of Swing as an alto saxophonist , to which Colin T. Dawson , Bernd Lhotzky and Oliver Mewes belong. He has also accompanied musicians such as Clark Terry , Harry Sweets Edison , Hazy Osterwald , Ken Peplowski , Peanuts Hucko , Kenny Davern and Dick Hyman on tours . In 1998, 2002, 2003 and 2004 he played at the International March of Jazz in Clearwater (Florida) . He has made guest appearances not only in Europe and the USA, but also in Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

Hopkins can be heard on more than 30 recordings with different musicians and formations. In 2000 his solo album Daybreak was released on the American label “Arbors Records” , which “Jazz Classique” recognized as one of the top ten albums of the year.

Prizes and awards

As a musician who carries on the flame of old jazz, he received the Keeper of the Flame award from the Park Lane Club in Osnabrück in 2013 . The Echoes of Swing album Message from Mars (2013) received the Prix ​​de l ' Académie du Jazz and the German Record Critics' Prize ; the fourth album of this group 4 Jokers in the Pack received the Grand Prix du Disque de Jazz in France . Hopkins has also been a lecturer at the Cologne University of Music since 2005 .
