Bernd Lhotzky

Bernd Lhotzky (born December 11, 1970 in Tegernsee ) is a German jazz pianist and composer .

Life

Lhotzky was born to a German father and a French mother. His great-grandfather was the writer Heinrich Lhotzky (1859–1930). At the age of 17 - as the best applicant in his field - he was accepted at the Munich Conservatory , which he attended alongside high school. He studied composition with Paul Engl and piano with Michael Leslie, Franz Massinger , Gottfried Hefele and Henri Chaix .

Today he is regarded worldwide as one of the most competent representatives of the classical jazz piano. He is regularly the "International stride piano Summit" at the festival Jazz in July after New York and for Arbors Records Jazz Party to Clearwater in the State of Florida invited. With Dick Hyman he recorded the much acclaimed album Stridin 'the Classics . He belongs to the Echoes of Swing , to Three'sa Crowd (with Frank Roberscheuten and Shaunette Hildabrand ) and also performs regularly in the piano duo with Chris Hopkins .

In addition, Bernd Lhotzky wrote the soundtracks for several German short films.

Awards

In 2001 the London magazine Piano chose Lhotzky's CD Stridewalk  - alongside CDs by Lang Lang , Grigori Sokolow and Keith Jarrett  - as one of the ten best piano albums of the year. The same CD recognized the aperitif team from Swiss Radio DRS as one of the 12 best jazz productions of 2000. He also received the “Prix de L'Académie du Jazz”, the Tassilo Prize of the Süddeutsche Zeitung (2008) and the “ Grand Prix du Disque de Jazz ” of the Hot Club de France (1998 and 2007) several times . The album message from Mars (with Oliver Mewes, Colin T. Dawson, Chris Hopkins) was included in the quarterly list of the best of the German Record Critics' Prize in 2011.
