Piano duo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Piano duo is the name given to two pianists playing one or two pianos .

history

Since the 17th century, composers have referred to their vocal pieces as well as their instrumental pieces, which can be cast in different ways, as duets or duos , provided that they were to be interpreted by two singers or two instrumentalists. Compositions for two harpsichords or, later, pianos or piano for four hands were also often called duos. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the number of pieces that were composed for two pianos, with and without accompanying instruments, or for piano four hands increased.

The term piano duo in today's parlance, however, does not refer to the form of the composition, but to the ensemble of performers consisting of two pianists. Here there is a linguistic difference to the piano trio , for example , in which both the composition and the ensemble consisting of 3 musicians can be meant.

The repertoire with original compositions for 2 pianists is not very extensive. So it is not surprising that a large number of compositions for other ensembles, chamber music or orchestral, arranged for two pianos or piano for four hands are happily and very successfully included in the concert programs of today's piano duos.

The interaction between two pianists is technically extremely delicate. It requires a precise correspondence of the playing processes down to the smallest detail, which can generally only be achieved after a long period of playing music together. This is why siblings, including married couples, have often come together to play together over the long term.

The world's first and only chair for piano duo was established in 2012 at the hmt - Rostock University of Music and Drama , and has been occupied by Hans-Peter Stenzl and his brother Volker Stenzl since November 1, 2012 . The professorship is limited to three years and is financed from private foundation funds.
