Claude Bolling (born April 10, 1930 in Cannes - † December 29, 2020 in Saint-Cloud ) was a French jazz musician ( piano ), composer and music producer .

Life

Bolling, who was considered a child prodigy , won a jazz competition in 1944 and then formed his own jazz combo . In 1948 he performed at the Nice Jazz Festival . In the same year he played with Rex Stewart , in 1951 with Roy Eldridge and in 1953 and 1956 with Lionel Hampton records. He then founded a big band and worked as musical director for recordings (for example for Brigitte Bardot ) and also produced film music . Later he also wrote compositions in which he merged jazz and classical music, such as Jean-Pierre Rampal , Maurice André, Elena Duran or Yo-Yo Ma . For the jazz pianist George Shearing and the classical guitarist Angel Romero he composed the Concerto pour guitare classique et piano jazz , which was recorded with the support of Ray Brown on bass and the drummer Shelly Manne and which was released on LP in 1981. Both as a pianist and as a jazz composer, Bolling was strongly influenced by Duke Ellington .

As a film composer, Bolling was mainly active in French film (including nine times for Jacques Deray ), and occasionally in international productions. He died in late December 2020 at the age of 90.
