action

Euphemia Ashby lived in the mid-19th century in the southern United States with the family of her best friend Georgia Lawshe. The two spend part of their childhood together, an intimate and happy time for the two girls. But a separation is about to occur with mixed feelings: Euphemia is expecting the arrival of her father, who wants to bring her to his home. The two girls are afraid of the separation, but on the other hand Euphemia is very happy to see her father again. He died of heart failure on the way to her. His son-in-law, Texas ranger Bartlett McClure, the husband of Euphebias older sister Sarah, stands in for him. He takes the girl to Texas , where she is now growing up with her sister's family, in the middle of a country torn by civil war, Indian attacks and looters. The close friendship with the now distant Georgia Lawshe keeps her afloat.

Georgia Lawshe, meanwhile, has her own painful experiences with racism, Indian persecution, slavery, and war.

Life brings the two young women back together in Texas, where they first of all struggle with their differences. But strokes of fate and social problems weld the two together again more and more until they stand side by side for women's suffrage.

The women experience the civil war as well as battles against the Mexicans and the Indians .
