Terrence Vaughan Mann (born July 1, 1951 in Ashland , Kentucky ) is an American musical , film and television actor .

Earlier life

Terrence Mann was born in Kentucky, the eldest of three sons, and grew up in Largo , Florida . He grew up in a musical family; his parents were both musically active. In 1969 he graduated from Largo High School. During the subsequent college time at Jacksonville University , Mann gained his first acting experience in an open-air theater on the Outer Banks near Manteo (North Carolina) , where he appeared as an actor during the summer. There he also met the theater director Joe Layton, who would later help him get his first engagement on Broadway . After college, Mann completed further studies at the North Carolina School of Arts .

Career

In 1980, Mann made his stage actor debut in the musical Barnum at the St. James Theater in New York City . In 1982 he took on one of the leading roles in the musical Cats . It was there that he met his future wife, the stage actress Charlotte d'Amboise. 1985 Mann made his film debut with a supporting role in Richard Attenborough's drama A Chorus Line . Just a year later, his most famous film role followed in the horror parody Critters - You are here! in which he played the alien bounty hunter Ug . In this film Mann also sang the movie song Power of the Night . He also embodied the role of the bounty hunter Ug in the three sequels of the Critters series (1988-1992).

1987 Mann first appeared in the role of Javert in the musical version of Victor Hugo's Les Misérables . He embodied this role in later revivals of the musical, including 2003 at the New York Imperial Theater and 2015 at the Connecticut Repertory Theater of the University of Connecticut . The role of Javert earned Mann a first Tony Award nomination. He received his second Tony Award nomination in 1994 for his appearance in the musical Beauty and the Beast . In 1997 he had another leading role as Police Chief Chauvelin in the musical The Scarlet Seal . That same year he had a guest role on the television series All My Children .

In addition to his work on the theater stage, Mann established himself over the years primarily as a television actor. He had various roles (mostly guest appearances) in individual episodes of television series such as Der Equalizer (1987–1988), Gargoyles (1997, as the voice of Oberon ) or Law & Order (2001–2005). In 2007, Mann took on one of the leading roles in the Canadian-American series The Dresden Files with the role of Hrothbert of Bainbridge . The series was canceled after a season. From 2015 to 2018, Mann starred in the television series Sense8 in the recurring role of Mr. Whispers . After the Critters series , Mann could no longer gain a noticeable foothold in the field of film ; his career as a film actor was limited to the few engagements in the 1980s and early 1990s.

In 2009, Mann took on the role of Mal Knieke in the world premiere of the musical version of The Adams Family in Chicago . The other roster of the musical included Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth . He also played the role of Mal Knieke in other performances of the musical before he left the show in April 2011. From December 2012 to January 2013 he played the role of King Charles in the musical Pippin at the American Repertory Theater in Boston . This role earned Mann his third Tony Award nomination in 2013. From September 2015 to January 2016, Mann took on a role in the musical Finding Neverland at short notice to replace an actor who had dropped out.

Others

Mann still works as a professor of theater and musicals at Western Carolina University in North Carolina. He has been married to fellow actress Charlotte d'Amboise since 1996. The couple have two daughters.
