Finding Neverland ( Neverland find ) is a 2014 premiered Musical of Ivor Novello award winner and Take That frontman Gary Barlow OBE in collaboration with Grammy award winner Eliot Kennedy . Directed by Harvard graduate and Tony Award winner Diane Paulus, the screenplay by British playwright James Graham and the choreography by Mia Michaels; the entire contract was awarded and supervised by producer Harvey Weinstein . The musical tells, inspired by the true events, the story of the genesis of a theater classic " Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Would not Grow Up " ( Peter Pan, or The Boy Who did not grow up / wanted to grow up ) by Sir James Matthew Barrie . This article also covers two studio albums from the main production as well as an earlier musical (premiered 2012 in Leicester , UK ) with the same title and similar content, but largely independent of Barlow's and Kennedy's version.

action

At the beginning of the play, the audience gets to know the Scottish playwright James Matthew Barrie, who in London at the turn of the century suffers from writer's block and the pressure of expectations of his employers and viewers. After a reception, he returns home dejected and finds that his marriage is also suffering more and more from his career low. Barrie's rather superficial woman, who is especially interested in maintaining status and social (aristocratic) contacts, cannot keep up with his childish imagination and is constantly distancing herself from him. During his walks in London's Kensington Gardens , he met the young widow Sylvia Llewelyn Davies and her four sons and became friends with them. He spends a lot of time with the children, dresses up, teaches them tricks and takes them into ever new adventurous fantasy worlds full of child heroes like cowboys and pirates. He feels especially connected to Peter, the middle son, and tries to give the depressed and withdrawn boy a little bit of fantasy and joy back. At the same time, however, he has to struggle with the restrictions of a rigid and inhibited society, the suspicious eyes of Sylvia's imperious mother, as well as his own inhibitions. His adventures with the children ultimately provide Barrie with inspiration for a new play, the implementation of which, due to his extraordinary ideas, is initially shaped by conflicts: the actors are supposed to fly across the stage, talk to fairies and wear animal costumes. After initial skepticism, Peter Pan finally became a complete success and revolutionized the theater for a long time: With this work, the entertainment industry, which is completely geared towards the adults of the upper class, opens up to children who had previously lost nothing in the theater. But then Sylvia falls seriously ill and the children's belief in the possibility of a perfect, fantastic world is put to the test again. Barrie still manages to maintain her courage to face life. On the deathbed, Sylvia transfers custody of the boys to her mother and James. According to Barrie's idea, Sylvia's death is depicted as a transition into Neverland, which in this implementation is reminiscent of the Old Testament idea of the paradisiacal garden .

background

The story of the Peter Pan author is based on true events: In fact, Barrie played an increasingly important, almost fatherly role in the life of the Llewelyn Davies family, right up to the informal adoption of the five children after Sylvia's death. The fact that these very children inspired him to create his masterpiece Peter Pan is at least consistent with what Barrie said.

The musical was inspired by a feature film of the same name from 2004, known in German-speaking countries under the title When dreams learn to fly . This in turn is based on the play The Man Who Was Peter Pan by Allan Knee. The musical was produced by Harvey Weinstein , who was already the executive producer of the film.

An earlier version of the musical celebrated 2012 debut in Curve Theater in September Leicester ( England ) after a scheduled start in the La Jolla Playhouse in fall 2011 had been canceled. This musical was directed by Rob Ashford, Allan Knee (author of the literature) wrote the script, Scott Frankel and Michael Korie wrote the music. At that time, a move to London West End was already planned for 2013, after mixed reviews and backstage disagreements, Weinstein decided instead to have the piece completely overhauled by a new team of creators and moved production to the United States . Through a recommendation from James Corden , he came across the English singer-songwriter Gary Barlow OBE, whom he was able to win over for the composition and text. British producer Eliot Kennedy, with whom Barlow had worked since the early Take That successes, also contributed to the musical design of the piece. The British playwright James Graham was hired as the scriptwriter and the American director Diane Paulus was responsible for the execution.

This completely revised version by Barlow and Kennedy was shown in 2014 in the American Repertory Theater (ART) at Harvard University in Cambridge ( MA ). After the end of the first season in Cambridge, the production hit New York's Broadway in March 2015 (official opening: April 15) and became a box-office hit. By the time the last curtain fell on Broadway on August 21, 2016, the show had 600 performances there alone. From October 2016 the musical went on a tour with a new ensemble through 25 American cities, at the same time the main production began to move to England . The start is scheduled for spring 2017 in London's West End .

Reviews

Broadway, NYC

"The musical is a rousing crowd puller, which unfortunately can rarely be found on Broadway."

"Staged by Diane Paulus with an imaginative instinct."

“James Graham's expert script follows the basic structure of the film, but is too often satisfied with clichés. Matthew Morrisons J. M. Barrie is an appealing nobody and yet an unwilling protagonist, too often a passive observer of the four boys' games. Director Paulus and Morrison grappled with the text to make Barrie more convincing (...). Barlow's and Kennedy's melodies offer a familiar dance-like cheerfulness and are catchy like some well-known Beatles songs, but the lyrics are banal and easy to forget. While the rather maudlin ballads 'Believe', 'All That Matters' and 'What You Mean To Me' could just as easily come from dozens of other musicals, the brisker pieces are really fun. "

"This demanding and exciting production is a real must!"

“The first applause comes before the overture. A raging clap breaks out in the hall as a bright point of light dances across the ceiling and curtain of the Lunt-Fontanne Theater in New York, where the musical Finding Neverland opened on Wednesday evening. This little light is guaranteed to produce a Pavlovian reaction for anyone familiar with the story of 'Peter Pan' in its myriad forms, which is certainly true for anyone who has lightened their wallet for this evening. Said little light stands for Tinker Bell, this spirited fairy who needs applause to stay alive. (…) The show, first produced in 2012 in Leicester, England, was revived and completely refurbished at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Mass., Where I saw it last summer. At that time I didn't have much to complain about (...). For New York, Mr. Jordan has been replaced by the more famous (and handsome) Mr. Morrison. The original, lovable leading actress Laura Michelle Kelly was taken over from Cambridge. However, Mr. Grammer was also brought in and replaced a very good Michael McGrath in the double role of Barries American producer Charles Frohman and Captain Hook , the antagonist who emerged from Es Barries in the finale of the first act of this version . Yes exactly. In this narrative of Barrie's life, it takes an id to create Neverland. To begin with, we see our bearded Scottish hero as a successful and popular writer suffering from writer's block and an unhappy marriage to a superficial aristocrat (Teal Wicks). One day he meets four adorable little boys, the Llewelyn Davies brothers, in Kensington Gardens. He is only too happy to take part in their wild role-playing games, which follow the philosophy, later expressed in song, that the world is 'so mysterious and wild / as soon as one begins to look at it through the eyes of a child' ('Play'). The spectacle of a strange man playing with young children in the park usually triggers alarm bells - at least in this age of Amber Alert. But don't worry: Mr. Morrison has stripped his resolutely neutral performance of any sexual suggestion. Clear the stage for the boys 'mother, Sylvia (Ms. Kelly), a widow with a bad cough and an inner child who is instantly attracted to Barrie, to whom she says,' I think believing is like having wings . ' With all of the romping around with Sylvia and her sons, Barrie finds that childish play can inspire a play. The result is the work that gives him immortality and, at the same time, the longest-lasting portrait of inhibition of development in theater history. Armed with a bluish vintage postcard set by Scott Pask and period costume by Suttirat Anne Larlarb, 'Finding Neverland' follows Barrie's struggle against his own inhibitions and a world of rigid, disapproving adults. Like the Disney stage version of 'Mary Poppins' (Ms. Kelly starred in London), this show jumps back and forth between sunlight and midnight flair (Kenneth Posner is responsible for the lighting). (...) But shadows always hold treasures, as is the case here in a climactic fantasy sequence in which Captain Hook comes to life to bring Barrie into contact with his dark side: 'Set me free!' He instructs Barrie. Barrie's development is underlain by a score that calls to mind images from animated adventure films (...). Mr. Barlow, the composer, was a founding member of the British boy band Take That and a judge on a British talent show. Every song (...) is vaguely reminiscent of familiar melodies that have made the soundtrack of our lives. How can you hear the sound of a tin flute without thinking of Celine Dion , mourning the sinking of the Titanic ? (Ms. Kelly and Mr. Morrison even adopt the famous posture of the fateful couple). (...) Almost every element of this production seems to have appeared somewhere else: the dialogues, the jerky choreography by Mia Michaels, the jokes, the anachronistic portrayal of the actors who put Barrie's pieces into action. (…) It is quite possible that this very lack of novelty contributed to the particular appeal of this piece. Finding Neverland was completely sold out in Cambridge, and it's already a huge box-office hit here too. When Barrie said he was working on a new and surprising piece, his producer Frohman replied that he didn't like surprises: 'I said I want something new. New does not necessarily mean different . Think of it like - a new penny. It looks and feels like an old penny, right? But he's just - shinier. ' According to this criterion, Finding Neverland could easily be a Charles Frohman production. "

"(...) a wonderful, entertaining, moving experience with great, incredibly entertaining songs."

“My wife and I were privileged to see this show and we really enjoyed it. Ignore the first Times review and let yourself be carried away by the fantastic ensemble! "

“A feast of the imagination!”

ART Cambridge

“Sometimes pale and sometimes wonderful (...) sung well, sometimes even charming, and beautifully staged - but boring. Finding Neverland has yet to find itself. Only when a soaring song concludes the first act - presented by topliner Jeremy Jordan ( Smash ), who plays the introverted Scottish playwright with sweet affection and a pinch of sex appeal - does the production receive the much-needed boost (...). It is Barrie, Let It Go '( let go ) moment he confronts his demons, personified by Captain Hook. This is played by Michael McGrath, who at the same time portrays Barrie's producer Charles Frohman with sour pleasure. (…) You notice that something is missing when the servants (…) dance across the stage after an eccentric, playful choreography by Mia Michaels. A lot has happened since the musical opened its doors in Leicester, England in 2012, mainly due to a complete replacement of the Gestalter line. There is now a new book by James Graham (author of 'This House', National Theater) and a new score by Brit-Pop songwriter Gary Barlow as taxwoman Diane Paulus, who also reinvented 'Pippin' for the current Broadway show (from the 90s boy band Take That) and Eliot Kennedy. But more work will be needed before this show can reach for the stars. While some of the melodies have an air of carefree and joy in them - including the theme song that Jennifer Hudson presented at the Tony Awards (no, it is not part of the show) - others belong in the 'serves its purpose' category. The story focuses on Barrie and his writer's block (which is why it is not easy for the audience to identify with the topic at first) and how he got through a beautiful widow (Laura Michelle Kelly) and her wild boys (Alex Dreier, Hayden Signoretti, Sawyer Nunes) finds himself and new inspiration. One of the boys especially helps him with this, Peter (Aiden Gemme), who initially resists Barrie's childish imagination. The boy's quick U-turn in Graham's straightforward narrative robs act one of potential interest and some depth of character. Without this conflict, all of the drama centers on the widow's bossy mother (Carolee Carmello), who is suspicious of Barrie's affection for the family and his superficial wife (Jeanna DeWaal). Understandably, a large part of the hubbub of the true story had to be sorted, simplified or sentimentalized, but unfortunately this also lost many sharp edges and some momentum. Act one limps to the end, despite some appearances from Barrie's liturgical theater company and a sequence in which the children - spurred on by Barrie - turn a dinner party upside down. The second act has more oomph: It's 1904, Barrie's new piece is now moving towards the big opening night - and the widow becomes seriously ill. Although there are no floating scenes - a strategic mistake (...) - at the latest, the widow's transition to Neverland is a fascinating piece of stage art including an "air sculpture" by Daniel Wurtzel. But nothing in the production comes close to Tinker Bell's delightful pre-show appearance. "Finging Neverland" will need more of that magic of theater if it is to become addicting to audiences. "
