Helping Haiti is a charity project for British, American, Irish, Canadian and Australian pop musicians founded in early 2010 by music producer Simon Cowell with the aim of raising money for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti .

history

Under the influence of the earthquake of January 12, 2010 and several aftershocks in the following days, in which 200,000 people were believed to be killed, 250,000 more people injured and 1.5 million people left homeless, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown approached music producer Simon Cowell came up with the idea of recording a benefit single based on the example of Band Aid . Cowell chose the song Everybody Hurts , originally by the band REM from 1992. Brown assured the British government that it would be exempt from VAT.

All proceeds from the single go to the “Helping Haiti” fund of the British daily The Sun and the Disasters Emergency Committee . The recording was first presented to the public on February 2, 2010 on BBC Radio 1's program . On February 7, 2010 the track was released as a single and download. In Ireland and Great Britain the production rose to number 1 on the charts.
