Joe McElderry (born June 16, 1991 ) is a British pop singer. In his home country, he became known for winning the sixth season of the talent show The X Factor , which was broadcast on the evening program of the ITV television channel between August and December 2009 .

Live and act

Unlike four out of five X-Factor winners before (Steve Brookstein also failed to do so in 2004 as the first winner of The X Factor), his debut single did not reach the coveted position of Christmas number one in Great Britain. An anti-X-Factor campaign managed to get the song Killing in the Name from Rage Against the Machine to the top before him. However, the following week it still reached number 1 in the UK charts.

In July 2010, he announced that he was gay and thanked his fans and family for their support.

In October 2010 he released his first studio album entitled Wide Awake . The pre-single Ambitions , a cover version of the hit by Norwegian band Donkeyboy , reached # 6 in the UK Top 40 .
