Steve Desmond Brookstein (born November 10, 1968 ) is a British singer.
Career
Brookstein started his career in 2004 as the winner of the first season of The X Factor , a casting show for the British television channel ITV . When he appeared in the final broadcast on December 11, 2004 , he received 8 million votes in televoting .
Before taking part in the show, Brookstein only appeared in various pubs in south London as a karaoke singer .
The X Factor win came with a £ 1 million record deal. On December 20, 2004, Brookstein's debut single was released, a cover version of the Phil Collins classic Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now) from 1984 . With this single he reached number 1 in the British singles charts on January 8, 2005 . Brookstein donated all proceeds from the sale of the single to the victims of the flood disaster in the Indian Ocean .
