Alexandra Imelda Cecelia Ewan Burke (born August 25, 1988 in Islington , London ) is a British pop singer .

Private life

Burke is the daughter of Soul II soul singer Melissa Bell , with whom she had a very close relationship until her death (2017). She repeatedly offered to donate a kidney to help her with her illness. However, her mother refused.

Career

In her homeland, Burke became known for winning the fifth season of the talent show The X Factor , which was broadcast on the evening program of the ITV television channel between August and December 2008 .

During the season, she and the other X-Factor finalists recorded a cover version of Mariah Carey's song Hero , which was number one on the UK charts for three weeks in November 2008 .

In the final show on December 13, 2008, she prevailed against the four-piece band JLS and the singer Eoghan Quigg with 58% of the total of eight million audience votes and received a record deal worth one million British pounds with Syco Music / Sony BMG .

One day after the finale, in the week before Christmas, Burke's debut single Hallelujah , a cover version of the 1984 hit by Leonard Cohen , was released in the UK . According to Simon Cowell , inventor of The X Factor, 500,000 pre-orders were already before the finale received for the single. Hallelujah immediately rose to number 1 on the UK charts over Christmas, making it number one for Christmas in the UK. In the sales statistics for 2008, the song was also number 1 ahead of the X-Factor joint effort Hero .

It then took nine months to finish their debut album Overcome . In the week before its release, the song Bad Boys was released as a single in early October 2009 , a collaboration with US rapper Flo Rida . With this, too, she immediately jumped back to number 1 on the charts in Great Britain and Ireland . The album followed to the top of the charts and was also able to place itself internationally. Four more songs from it came into the British Top 20, with Start Without You she even had her third number one placement.

In early 2011, Burke went on a UK tour before starting work on a new album. Shortly before release, she left Simon Cowell's label and joined RCA . In March 2012 she released the single Elephant there in collaboration with DJ and producer Erick Morillo . The song reached number 3 on the UK charts. Two months later, the song Let It Go was released immediately before the album , which only came in at number 33. The album Heartbreak on Hold then did not go beyond number 18 in the album charts and stayed in the top 75 for only two weeks. Only a little later, Burke announced that she was working on an album for the USA, the focus of which should be R&B again.
