The Saarmunder church is the Protestant church in Saarmund , a district of Nuthetal . It is located in the center of the village on the north side of the former market square, the south side of which is bordered by the cemetery . The slender, rectangular tower, which, like the church, is made of red bricks, is visible from afar as a landmark .

history

The church was built as a flat-roofed three-aisled basilica in the Italianizing neo-Romanesque style of Potsdam in the years 1846–1849 by Friedrich August Stüler according to plans by Ludwig Persius . The previous building, a half-timbered church built between 1792 and 1794 according to plans by the master builder Johann Christian Friedrich Keferstein , burned down in 1840. Originally, the new church to be built was to have two towers, but for cost reasons only one could be built.

The interior consists of a central nave about six meters wide . The two side aisles are each connected to the central nave by five arched arcades that rest on pillars. The windows are arranged in the line of sight of the arcades and also have a round arch shape at the level of the gallery. At the front of the side aisles are two rooms framed in wood and glass, one of which serves as a sacristy.

On the horseshoe-shaped gallery stands the organ from 1848, which was one of the first works by the Potsdam organ builder Carl Ludwig Gesell . The organ replaced the previous instrument from 1794 by Johann Wilhelm Grüneberg . Your prospectus consists of three arched fields in which the pipes of the register principal 8 'and 4' are arranged. Two rows of pipes are arranged one above the other in the two outer fields. The upper row of pipes is not playable and is only used for decoration. Below the frieze there are 4 gilded boy statuettes, which were made from plaster casts after Christian Daniel Rauch . The organ is single-manual and has six manual and three pedal registers.

There is a three-part bell in the bell house of the tower. The bells were cast in 1924 by the Bochum Association for Cast Steel Manufacture. Each bell has an inscription. The largest one has the inscription: “Glory to God on high”, the middle one: “Peace on earth” and the smallest one: “People are pleased”. In the last days of the war the north wall was damaged by a projectile and the tower clock was also damaged. In 2016 a new tower clock, which was made based on the historical model, was inaugurated. The tower clock was financed by donations from residents and friends of the town as a contribution to the town's 800th anniversary.

The interior decoration was renovated in 1909 and 2004. In 2001 the upper part of the painted nave was exposed. In 2014, the south side of the nave was repainted. The original color concept of Ludwig Persius was used.
