Flo Rida (born September 17, 1979 in Opa-locka , Florida ; real name Tramar Dillard , also written Flo-Rida ) is an American rapper . The name is a play on words with the name of his home country Florida and a slang spelling of the term “ flow rider ” (denotes someone who figuratively rides a wave).

Musical biography

Musical beginning

As a teenager, Dillard and two friends founded the hip-hop trio Groundhoggz , with whom he appeared in the area as an opening act for other artists. Through a brother-in-law he got connections to the 2 Live Crew and from 2001 worked for the crew member Fresh Kid Ice as a hype man, a kind of heat-up before and during the concerts.

First successes

This was followed by solo demo recordings and three unproductive years in California, where he also worked with DeVante Swing , before he accepted an offer from E-Class, a youth acquaintance from Florida, and signed a contract with his label Poe Boy / Atlantic. He first drew attention to himself with a contribution to DJ Khaled's album We the Best in the piece Bitch I'm From Dade County . A first own single, Birthday (featuring Rick Ross ) followed. For the second release, the single Low , T-Pain was won as support , which in 2007 had already been at number 1 on the US Billboard charts twice. The song gained additional popularity when it was selected for the soundtrack to Step Up to the Streets (released in February 2008), the follow-up film to Step Up . At the turn of the year 2007/08, Flo Rida's single made it to the top of the charts . The single low set a record with 470,000 downloads in one week.

2008–2009: debut album

For the debut album Mail on Sunday , which will be released in 2008, rappers such as Rick Ross , Trey Songz and Plies could be won. Also represented are Sean Kingston and will.i.am from the Black Eyed Peas . Also has Timbaland worked as a producer. The focus of his texts on Mails on Sunday is on party content. Political or socially critical statements are far removed from him. Especially funk, the music with which he was socialized by his parents, has done to him what you can hear in numerous productions. The album made it to number 4 on the US charts .

Second album: ROOTS
