Step Up to the Streets is a 2008 dance film directed by Jon Chu, starring Robert Hoffman , Briana Evigan , Adam Sevani and Cassie Ventura and the sequel to Step Up .

action

Street dancer Andie West lives with Sarah, a friend of her late mother. In order to take part in the illegally organized dance competition “The Streets”, Andie and her dance group, the crew “410”, shoot a video of their dance performance in the subway. Since Andie regularly skips school for dancing and rarely keeps to agreements, Sarah feels overwhelmed with their upbringing. She sees the only way out to send Andie to her aunt in Texas. Andie then runs away and meets Tyler Gage, who shows her a way out of the situation: If she loses a dance battle against him, she should audition at the Maryland School of the Arts, at the school that leads him off the street showed. At first she was not very enthusiastic about his idea, but she still got involved and lost.

At the audition, Andie is the only one who is not performing a classical ballet and is accepted through the intercession of Chase, the brother of the director Blake Collins. At first she feels uncomfortable at the new school, until she gets to know Chase better and becomes friends with Moose, a student of the set designer , who also dances in his free time.

The lessons at her new school take up so much time that Andie can come to the crew's rehearsals less and less and is thrown out of the crew. Chase can finally convince her to found her own crew, the "MSA", made up of classmates who also feel restricted by the ballet world. In addition, Missy, a friend of Andie, changes to the "MSA" because she does not like the behavior of the "410". To take part in “The Streets”, the crew needs a good application video in which they target the “410”.

On the way home from a barbecue at Missy’s home where Andie and Chase got closer, Chase is beaten up by members of the 410. In addition, the "410" devastated a rehearsal room of the Maryland School of the Arts with the warning to the "MSA" not to compete in "The Streets". Andie, who takes responsibility for the vandalism , is expelled from school, with the consequence that she now has to move to her aunt in Texas.

“The Streets” takes place on the evening of a school benefit gala. Chase decides to take part in "The Streets" with the crew. They visit Andie's home and Sarah allows Andie to go to "The Streets" with her crew because the crew tells her that Andie is ready to take responsibility.

Director Collins wants to prevent the appearance of the "MSA", but Moose can persuade him to watch the appearance first. When the "410" stopped the "MSA" from performing, Andie reminded the audience of the roots of "The Streets". After all, the "MSA" occurs in the pouring rain on the street. The group wins the competition and Director Collins removes Andie's expulsion from school. He also advises Moose to change subjects. Moose is kissed by Sophie. Andie and Chase also become a couple.

criticism

The film received mostly negative reviews, earning a 27% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 62 reviews.

The lexicon of international films judges: "The youth dance film, which is emphasized on subversive and» cool «, deals only with the» underground «dance scene with little conviction and propagates self-confidence and respect as prerequisites for social advancement."

The editorial team of Computer Bild sums it up: "In the stereotypical story, only the ingenious soundtrack and the unusual choreographies are convincing."

Ulrich Kriest from the Stuttgarter Zeitung judged that it was "a real surprise [...] that the [...] story of the exploitative conflict between anarchoid subculture and subsidized high culture here turned out bluntly racist."

Susanna Fazio from Outnow.ch admits that “the plot [is] predictable, but that doesn't bother us.” In terms of content, “one shouldn't expect too much intellectual entertainment, because the focus here is clearly on dancing. Andie's self-confident sayings and the squabbling with Chase are, however, quite amusing to watch. [...] An entertaining freakshow, so to speak. ”In addition to the passionate commitment of the actors, she particularly praises the unusual and time and again surprising choreography and the convincing soundtrack. She concludes with the verdict that the film is "a colorful dance spectacle for dance film and street dance fans."
