Sonja Sohn (* 1964 in Newport News , Virginia as Sonja Williams ) is an American actress .
Life
Childhood and youth
Sonja Sohn was born in Newport News in 1964 to an African American soldier and a Korean mother. Her parents met in South Korea when her father was stationed there as a soldier for the United States . After son's older brother was born, her mother decided to move to the United States, fearing that her children would be discriminated against because of their ancestry.
Son had a difficult childhood in the United States. She was often teased because of her mixed race, her schizophrenic father abused her mother, and her older brother was killed when she was a teenager. During this time until she was in her twenties, she struggled with cocaine and pill addiction .
Private
Son graduated from Warwick High School. She is married to the Australian composer Adam Plack. The two have two daughters.
Career
Before her son started acting , she was a slam poet . While she was doing her job on stage, Marc Levin offered her a role in his film Slam . After slam she had several smaller roles, e.g. B. in Shaft or Bringing Out the Dead . In addition, she starred in films like The Killing Zone or G .
She was best known for her role as Det. Shakima "Kima" Greggs in the HBO series The Wire and her resulting activities in drug prevention . Together with colleagues, she founded the ReWired for Change initiative , which takes care of young people at risk.
From 2011 to 2012 she appeared in Body of Proof as Detective Samantha Baker. Her role, however, was written out of the series after the second season, alongside that of Nicholas Bishop and John Carroll Lynch .
As a screenwriter and actress in the film Slam , she won the 1998 Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and Best Actress at the Gotham Awards . In the same year she was nominated for Best Debut Performance at the Independent Spirit Awards . In 2008 she won an Asian Excellence Awards for Outstanding Television Actress for her role on The Wire .
