Star Trek: Discovery is an American science fiction - television series and the sixth live-action television series, in the fictional Star Trek - universe plays. The series, also abbreviated to DSC , is about the eponymous Starfleet spaceship Discovery .

The pilot episode aired the US television station CBS for the first time on September 24, 2017, the following episodes have been appearing gradually in the United States and Canada since then on the video-on-demand platform CBS All Access . In Germany and other countries, the series is available from the streaming provider Netflix .

So far, the series has two seasons, the third has already been commissioned. The plot of the first two takes place a few years before that of Starship Enterprise . The upcoming third season will take place more than 900 years in the future.

action

season 1

The series is set in the main timeline of the Star Trek series universe, that is, not in the Kelvin timeline in which the reboot films are set. The series takes place ten years before Starship Enterprise .

At the center of the plot is Starfleet Officer Michael Burnham. Burnham was raised and trained on Vulkan after her parents passed away. Her foster parents are Sarek, a distinguished Vulcan and his human wife, Amanda Grayson, and her adoptive brother is Spock . At the beginning of the series, Burnham has served on the USS Shenzhou (registration number NCC-1227) for seven years . During a research mission, she triggers an incident with Klingons that leads to war. Due to differing views on how to deal with the threat from the Klingons, Burnham tries to ignore their captain Philippa Georgiou and carry out a pre-emptive strike against the Klingon battle cruiser. In the course of the space battle, the Shenzhou is destroyed, whose captain dies. Burnham is sentenced to life imprisonment for mutiny .

During a prisoner transport, Burnham is picked up by the USS Discovery (NCC-1031), which is conducting secret experiments with a biological propulsion system. Their captain Gabriel Lorca knows about their abilities and asks Burnham to be part of his crew.

The crew of the USS Discovery finds a method they can use to defeat the Klingons. But they are carried by a storm into a parallel universe before they can share their findings with Starfleet. There Burnham discovers that Captain Lorca and the revolutionary Lorca from the parallel universe have swapped places. After various conflicts, the Discovery makes it back into its universe. Ultimately, the Federation can win the war against the Klingons. Burnham is rehabilitated and (again) elevated to the rank of Commander. She now serves as a science officer on the Discovery .

season 2

Seven red signals occur. Since the Enterprise is damaged, its commander Pike comes on the Discovery as a captain . He misses his science officer Spock, whose disappearance seems to be related to the signals. The Discovery sets out to explore the signals. These turn out to be sightings of a "red angel", a humanoid figure presumably from the future in an exoskeleton . A signal leads the Discovery to a sphere that transfers all of its data to the ship. Spock had already drawn the "red angel" as a child; his disappearance from a facility treating him after a breakdown appears to be related to it. Burnham tracks down her adoptive brother Spock on Vulcan. It becomes clear that the sphere data creates an AI called "Control" that wants to wipe out all life in the universe. Burnham himself travels through time as a "red angel" to guide Discovery to the right places. In the end, Burnham travels 950 years into the future with the Discovery to protect the sphere data from access and to prevent the end of the universe.

History of origin

Alex Kurtzman at Comic-Con in San Diego in July 2018

In November 2015 it was announced that a new Star Trek television series was planned. Bryan Fuller initially acted as a showrunner and thus also as a producer alongside Alex Kurtzman . Fuller previously worked as a screenwriter for the Star Trek television series Deep Space Nine and Spaceship Voyager . However, he has not been actively involved since December 2016.

Another screenwriter who also acts as producer is Nicholas Meyer , director of the Star Trek films The Wrath of Khan and The Undiscovered Land and co-screenwriter of Star Trek IV: Back to the Present . Eugene Roddenberry , son of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry , and Trevor Roth are other executive producers on the series.

The Klingons speak correctly in the series - i. H. that developed by Marc Okrand - Klingon . This is the first series in which this is consistently the case (in the previous series it was only occasionally and often wrongly). The translation was done by the Canadian Klingonist Robyn Stewart. In addition, the Klingon teacher Lieven L. Litaer was hired by Netflix to create Klingon subtitles for the series, which are now available to users. Marc Okrand contributed some words especially for the series, which are now an official part of the language.

Filming began in September 2016 at Pinewood Studios in Toronto .

The music for the series was composed by Jeff Russo . The soundtrack includes 21 pieces of music and was released for download on December 15, 2017 by Lakeshore Records. A soundtrack for Chapter 2 of the first season (episodes 10-15) containing 22 selected pieces of music from these episodes was released on April 6, 2018.

Before any scriptwriters or directors were found for the series, David Stapf, President of CBS Television Studios, said in November 2015: “There is no better time to give Star Trek fans a new series than at the 50th celebrations . Anniversary of the original series. ”The first broadcast of the pilot episode was originally planned for January 2017 on the US broadcaster CBS , but was then postponed to May 2017 and again in January 2017 for an indefinite period.

On February 27, 2019, it was announced that the series would be extended for a third season. It should be broadcast from October 15, 2020.

Cast and dubbing

In November 2016, Michelle Yeoh , Doug Jones and Anthony Rapp were confirmed as cast members on the series. It was also announced that Jason Isaacs will be in command of the USS Discovery in the role of Captain Lorca. The Star Trek panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2017 confirmed that actors Anthony Rapp and Wilson Cruz would play the first homosexual couple in the Star Trek universe.

The German synchronization arises after dialogue books of Tobias Neumann and the dialogue director of Oliver field by the synchronous company Arena synchronous in Berlin .

The table lists the actors, their role names, their affiliation with the main cast (●) or with the secondary and guest actors (•) per season and the episodes with performances. The German voice actors are also given.

reception

Reviews

The series has so far won 82% of Rotten Tomatoes ' critics ; However, the audience rating is only 43%, which is the worst value of a Star Trek series (as of August 29, 2019).

Brian Lowry, editor of CNN , awarded 55 out of 100 possible points in his review, which appeared on the occasion of the appearance of the pilot film: The series has weaknesses in the area in which Star Trek series have so far shown their most fundamental strengths, the Interplay of the characters.

Ralf Döbele from wunschliste.de wrote about the series towards the end of the first release of the first season as the necessary “culture shock” in the Star Trek franchise and praised “above all a charismatic Starfleet crew that has their place in the sometimes overwhelming annals of the franchise. ”By not placing a captain at the center of the plot with the character Burnham,“ the creators managed to simply and elegantly rearrange the tried and tested Star Trek components. ” To make the horizontal dramaturgy the standard was "a step that was long overdue for Star Trek ".

The film service rates the series with three out of five possible stars and rated it - based on the first two seasons - as an "entertaining and exciting expansion of the narrative universe with interesting content-related accents, which, in addition to its action elements, also appears again and again is based on the tensions between well-contoured figures and revolves around the 'self-discovery phase' of Starfleet, which has to find itself as the protector of the peaceful coexistence of all beings against power and advantage thoughts and deeply rooted aversions. "

Looking back on the first season, the science fiction writer Torsten Dewi criticized it as conceptually problematic in an online discussion that the main character Michael Burnham is not a captain or commander, because she often enough because of the big decisions she cannot make is only a spectator or a supporting role. In addition, the Discovery crew lacks cohesion and loyalty and it is too difficult as a spectator to establish an emotional bond with the bridge crew.

Allegations of plagiarism

At the end of 2017, the Egyptian video game developer Anas Abdin published a post on his blog in which he accused CBS of borrowing several elements and characters from its adventure video game Tardigrades, which has been in the works since 2014 . Among other things, Michael Burnham is based on the character Yolanda and the couple Paul Stamets and Hugh Colber on the characters Maciek and Aziz. Above all, however, the technology shown in season 1 of the series of traveling through space using gigantic tardigrade was stolen from his video game.

Since the beginning of the development, Abdin kept a detailed chronicle in a forum about the plot, the characters and scenes from the video game, which the CBS authors would have probably used. Abdin tried to prove both the reenactment of individual characters, actions and scenes by comparing his video game and the series. The broadcaster CBS did not respond to inquiries. Therefore, Abdin announced at the end of August 2018 that he would be suing the studio.
