Emergence

With the beginning of the third season, Michael Piller , himself a screenwriter , was hired as executive producer of the series. Under Piller's direction, the focus was on the development of the main characters in the Enterprise . Gene Roddenberry had withdrawn more and more from the day-to-day business of the series from the second season, also due to illness. Piller also allowed virtually anyone to submit a script for a future episode of the series, some of which were actually implemented. For example, Ronald D. Moore had submitted a script that was implemented with the episode Mother Love . Moore was eventually hired as story editor and rose over the years to co-producer and producer of the series for the final season. He was involved in the script of 27 episodes of the series. The authors Hans Beimler, Richard Manning, Melinda M. Snodgrass and Ira Steven Behr left the team of authors.

Wil Wheaton , who was dissatisfied with the development of his character Wesley Crusher during the third season, announced his withdrawal from the ranks of the leading actors at the end of the season. A decision that the actor later regretted given the immense success of the series. His character appeared until the ninth episode of the fourth season and only had guest appearances, if at all, in the remaining seasons.

Before shooting the third season, the costume designer Robert Blackman was hired in the summer of 1989. He overhauled the design of the Starfleet uniforms used for the first two seasons. The tight-fitting one-piece suits made from elastane and originally designed by William Ware Theiss had repeatedly been criticized by the actors with regard to their portability. Blackman designed the new uniforms in two parts (upper part with higher collar and trousers with belt) from wool - gabardine . They cost about $ 3,000 each and were slightly tweaked several times for the first episodes of season three. The uniforms of the first two seasons, or modified versions of them, continued to appear in the course of the series, for reasons of cost, worn by supporting actors and extras .

The acting from the relationship between the Federation and Romulans episode The Enemy is based on the film Enemy Mine - Beloved enemy . The standout episodes of the season include The Old Enterprise , The Sins of the Father and In the Hands of the Borg / Assault Target Earth .

As a result, serious malfunctions accumulate on the Enterprise. In response to Stubbs' attempt to kill the nanites, the nanites disable the ship's life support systems . He tries unsuccessfully for a long time to convince the leader of the 15,000 colonists that they can be evacuated by the Enterprise, but wins more and more supporters. Responding to a distress call from the planet Rana-Vier, the Enterprise finds the planet devastated. All 11,000 colonists have been wiped out, with the exception of the elderly human Uxbridge couple. The Uxbridges cannot answer why they were spared and what happened to the others. After the husband reacted negatively and the Enterprise is shot at by an overpowering spaceship and put to flight, Picard recognizes a pattern in the behavior of the man and the alien spaceship and develops a theory that could explain the incidents. He brings the couple to the Enterprise, where the man reveals himself as an immortal, overpowering being. He reveals that his aversion to killing could not prevent the other inhabitants of the planet from being killed by the warlike Husnock. Because his wife died in the process, he replaced her with an image of her. Her death made him so angry that, without thinking twice, he used his powers to kill all 50 billion Husnock in an instant. Because the wave of energy that preceded the explosion originated at Riker's last whereabouts, Riker comes under strong suspicion of murder on the part of Apgar's daughter. To clarify the incident, those involved reconstruct the course of events from their point of view on the holodeck of the Enterprise. The prosecutors try to show that Riker seduced Apgar's daughter. With the help of his crew, Picard can finally prove that the scientist's plan to kill Riker had failed and that he instead accidentally killed himself.
