production

For the second season, the producers and scriptwriters planned to characterize the previously largely unexplored and faceless gamma quadrant in the series and to establish a power threatening the United Federation of Planets and the space station with the Dominion. However, viewers should only get to know the Dominion better in the third season. For this purpose, the Dominion was mentioned in several episodes spread over the second season, addressing its economic, military and political influence. For example, the episode Profit or Partner ( Rules of Acquisition ), in which the Dominion is mentioned for the first time, revealed that it is a power that influences the trade in goods among other peoples. The last episode of the second season, The Plan of the Dominion ( The Jem'Hadar ), finally showed representatives of the Dominion for the first time.

Filming for the season was disrupted for a few days in January 1994 by the Northridge earthquake .

Reviews

Season two is better than season one, but the series had not yet hit stride. The result is an uneven patchwork of themes and mid-course corrections, with a handful of classic Trek moments. […] Solutions are way too pat. [...] Whenever a complex astrophysical problem presents itself, the solution is always handy. [...] Sisko's character is (admittedly) not well-defined. His ponderous speeches and deadpan gaze failed to "engage" me. But his is not the only annoying character. Quark is unilaterally off-putting. Combined, these two manage to slow the momentum of most episodes. The irony is that the actors are quite good.

- Rob Lineberger, DVD Verdict

“Season 2 is better than season 1, but the series hasn't found its rhythm yet. The result is an inconsistent patchwork of topics and course corrections with a handful of classic Trek moments. [...] The solutions are far too simple. [...] Whenever a complex astrophysical problem arises, the solution is always at hand. […] Sisko's figure is (of course) not well laid out. His clumsy speeches and expressionless gaze could not take hold of me. But he's not the only annoying figure. Quark is one-sided deterrent. Together, the two take the swing of most episodes. The irony is that the actors are quite good. "

Fortunately, the character of Sisko's son Jake is handled reasonably naturally, with no Wesley Crusher-style "save the station with my science project" hijinks; in the context of a space station rather than a starship, his character fits in reasonably well.

- Holly E. Ordway, DVD Talk

“Fortunately, the role of Sisko's son Jake is handled reasonably naturally, with no Wesley Crusher-style 'save the station with my science project' delights; in the context of a space station, its role fits in appropriately compared to a spaceship. "
