Ira Steven Behr (born October 23, 1953 in New York City , New York ) is an American screenwriter and television producer . He is best known for his work as a showrunner , executive producer and author of the science fiction television series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , 4400 - The Returners and Alphas .

life and career

Behr grew up in the Bronx , where he attended DeWitt Clinton High School, and studied mass communication and theater at Lehman College in New York City . After graduation, he moved to Los Angeles to work as a screenwriter for television and film. He wrote u. a. Episodes for the series Jessica Novak (1981), Bret Maverick (1982) and Frank Buck - Adventure in Malaysia , before he worked for the series Fame , for which he worked as a writer from the fourth season (1984), in the sixth season also acted as a producer for the first time.

In 1989, during the third season, he joined the staff of Raumschiff Enterprise - The Next Century , where he also worked as a producer and writer, but left the series again after just one year because he felt creatively restricted. In 1993, at the instigation of series creator Michael Piller , he returned to the Star Trek franchise for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and stayed for the entire duration of seven seasons. From supervising producer in the first season he rose to co-executive producer at the beginning of the second season and finally took over the role of show runner and executive producer in 1995, after Michael Piller's final departure at the end of the third season. In addition, he wrote more than 50 episodes, steered the series in a direction previously unusual for Star Trek with long, multi-season story arcs and war scenarios and shaped the development of various Star Trek peoples, such as B. the Ferengi .

After the ending of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1999), he was showrunner of the short-lived comedy series Bob Patterson and the Twilight Zone remake from 2002 until he was executive producer and screenwriter at all for four years, from 2004 to 2007 four seasons of the science fiction series 4400 - The Returners participated. Other series for which he was responsible as showrunner and writer include LA Crash with Dennis Hopper and the first season of Alphas . For Outlander , he worked again for the first time since Star Trek: Deep Space Nine with Ronald D. Moore , the showrunner of the series. Behr was the (co-) executive producer of the first two seasons (2014-2016) and wrote several scripts.

For the 25th anniversary of the premiere of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , Behr created and produced the crowdfunded documentary What We Left Behind , a documentary about the series with interviews with cast, crew, producers and authors, which had its world premiere in October 2018 . After Adam Nimoy left as a director, Behr also co-directed with co-producer David Zappone .
