content
Pilot episode
In 2009, Max escaped as a child along with eleven others from the secret military research facility Manticore in Wyoming , where the genetically modified children, also known as X5, were bred and trained to be perfect soldiers. After the escape, the children separated. A few months later, terrorists set off an atomic bomb over the United States . Due to the electromagnetic impulse that occurred, all electronic devices were destroyed and the country thrown back to the level of a third world country. In the general confusion, the escaped children managed to go into hiding, but from then on (until the end of the first season) they were mercilessly hunted by Manticore soldiers, mainly Colonel Lydecker.
The series takes place in 2019. Max has built up an existence as a bike courier for the Jam Pony courier service in post-apocalyptic Seattle , but uses her special skills as a burglar after work. In the process, she meets the idealistic cyber journalist Logan Cale, aka "Eyes Only". He recruited Max as a campaigner against corruption and injustice in America's post-apocalyptic era; she becomes a Dark Angel . In return, Logan tries to track down Max's siblings.
season 1
Max and her siblings are on the run from Colonel Lydecker, the head of Manticore, who is mobilizing great resources to recapture the twelve X5 who fled. Max works with Logan and does the leg work for the paralyzed Logan, who in return researches information about her siblings. In the course of the season, Max meets her brother Zack again, who organized the outbreak at the time. Her sister Brin also shows up in Seattle. There is a strong attraction between Max and Logan that they neither want to admit to each other. In the season finale, Max and her sister attack Manticore. Max is fatally hit, only a heart transplant can save her. Zack sacrifices himself to save Max. Logan thinks Max is dead and escapes, Max is trapped in Manticore.
season 2
Max manages to escape from Manticore again and frees the other inmates in the process. From then on she tries to keep the existence of these so-called transgenics a secret, which is difficult due to their strange appearance. People reject the transgenic and a negative sentiment is fueled against them. In addition, Max also has to fight a mysterious eugenics organization that was founded in ancient times . One of the members of this organization had founded Manticore against their will. Her relationship with Logan is also made more difficult as she becomes infected with a deadly designer virus tailored for Logan that is transmitted through physical contact. At the end of the season, the existence of the transgenic is known, they retreat to a toxic waste-contaminated district. They are surrounded by a superior force of military and police, they decide not to flee and hoist a transgenic flag as a sign of resistance.
Protagonists
Max Guevara
Max is a genetically engineered super soldier who underwent brutal training in Manticore until she was twelve. Their genome has been tweaked, including adding cat genes, making them stronger and faster. As a side effect, she gets "in heat " twice a year and during this time approaches every man within reach. Thanks to her genes and training, Max is an excellent fighter. She is also a talented burglar, which she uses to supplement her household budget. Max works as a bike courier at JamPony. In her free time, she likes to drive around on her motorcycle. Max has been drawn to Logan since the beginning of the first season, but they both admit their feelings towards the end of the season. In the second season, Max is infected with a designer virus that would kill Logan if touched. In the books that describe the events after the second season, Max founds and manages a free mutant town. She manages to get rid of the designer virus and meets Logan.
Logan Cale aka Eyes Only
Logan comes from a wealthy family. He is an idealist who works for freedom and justice. In order to achieve his goals, he operates a pirate station, among other things . To do this, he penetrates television and broadcasts short “Streaming Freedom Videos”. In these he uses the pseudonym "Eyes Only" because only his eyes can be seen in the videos. As Eyes Only, he fights against corruption and crime. He is supported by Max and a network of informants. He was shot while trying to protect an informant and has since been paralyzed from the waist down. During the first season he first uses an artificial exoskeleton in order to be able to walk again, later this becomes possible for him through intravenous infusion of transgenic blood. In the books, Logan meets Max after the designer virus was removed from Max's body.
Written continuation
The open storylines of the series were deepened and continued in three books. While Departure into the Past sheds light on the series' prehistory, Skin Game and Deadly Secret continue seamlessly at the end of the second season and clarify all open questions. The latter books are based on the story of the originally planned 3rd season. All three volumes were written by Max Allan Collins and were published in Germany in 2002 and 2003 by Panini-Dino Verlag.
background
After the second season, the series was discontinued due to both low ratings and high production costs (over $ 2.3 million per episode). Outside the United States, the series was successful. While filming, fellow actors Jessica Alba and Michael Weatherly fell in love . In 2001, the two actors announced their engagement, but two years later they separated again.
