The Ventaxians accept Ardra's role, with which, according to legend, the Ventaxian people signed a treaty several generations ago that the residents can live in peace and health if they allow themselves to be enslaved by Ardra. As a result of La Forge's suspicion that Ardra is a fraud, she agrees to have her identity and the correctness of the contract proven in a court case in which Data takes on the role of judge. As the prosecutor, Picard argues that the Ventaxians are responsible for their own fate, and can expose Ardra as a cheater after proving, with La Forge's help, that Ardra's transmutation skills are generated with a spaceship camouflaged in orbit.

According to Datas, the unconsciousness lasted only half a minute. Several oddities aboard the ship, including that of Dr. Crusher found plants to grow faster, but corroborate the suspicion that the unconsciousness actually lasted for a day, and thus that Datas statement is wrong. After the ship continues to approach the planet on Picard's orders, a Paxan suddenly takes possession of Troi and Data reveals that the withdrawn Paxans had stunned the crew they considered intruders - contrary to all expectations, with the exception of Datas. In order to keep the Paxans from destroying the Enterprise, and in order not to let anyone know of the existence of the Paxans, Picard agrees to have the crew's memories of the Paxans erased; he also orders Data not to reveal anything about the Paxans to anyone.

Riker, surgically transformed into a Malcorian, is injured and admitted to a hospital on the planet Malcoria 3, where the local doctors soon discover that he belongs to an alien species. Riker is part of an Enterprise mission to explore the planet before the Federation officially makes first contact. Since Riker's injury and exposure were not planned in this way, and to prevent panic among the planet's inhabitants, Picard introduces himself and the matter to the Malcorian Chancellor Durken with the help of the Malcorian Research Minister Mirasta. He also declares that the Federation's sole purpose in pursuing the mission is peaceful. In contrast to Durken, Durken's security chief Krola is not at all convinced of this intention. Therefore, after Riker has unsuccessfully tried to escape, he tries to interrogate Riker and takes the risk of killing him. To incriminate Riker and to dissuade Mirasta from her future plans to conquer the universe, Krola tries to be killed by a phaser fired in Riker's hand. Dr. Crusher can save Riker and Krola, however. After hearing about what happened, Durken finally decides that his people are not yet ready to learn about other races in space. Mirasta will remain on the Enterprise at her own request.

La Forge's attempts to get to know Brahms privately fail because she is averse to him. At the same time, the Enterprise encounters a huge, alien creature in space, which the crew unintentionally kills while defending the ship. However, the Enterprise can help the animal's offspring to free themselves from the dead body. The boy immediately attaches itself to the outer hull of the Enterprise and feeds on the energy of the ship. La Forge and Brahms then look for a way to free the ship from the animal. Brahms found out, much to her displeasure, about the holoprogram with her alter ego and, to his disappointment, informed La Forge that she was married. When the Enterprise threatens to be used as a source of energy by conspecifics of the creature, both engineers successfully implemented a plan to free the Enterprise from the clutches of the animal. La Forge and Brahms decide to stay friends.

In addition, Troi is plagued by nightmares in which she hears the statement "eyes in the dark", among other things. As the cause of this and other strange incidents, Dr. Crusher the same reason the Britain crew died, namely dream withdrawal. Data has the hypothesis that both ships are pulled into a gap, where the Enterprise is now also deprived of its energy. According to Troi and Data, Troi's nightmares are caused by a spaceship on the other side of the gap that requires hydrogen for the Enterprise and Brittain to be released. When Data tries to channel the hydrogen from the Enterprise to the other ship, an explosion occurs, which frees the Enterprise from the gap.

Leitjen then begins to mutate into a strange being, and Dr. Crusher suspects this transformation as the cause of the disappearance of the other team members. After La Forge has recreated the landing site of the shuttles on the planet on the holodeck and identified an unknown shadow, he too is visibly transformed into an alien. While Dr. Crusher removes the parasite, which is responsible for both transformation, from Leitjen and then heals them again, La Forge flees to the planet. Meanwhile completely mutated into the other life form and only visible in UV light , the crew of the Enterprise can discover him there and can persuade Leitjen to stand up and have the parasite removed from him.

In preparation for repairing a broken telescope , Barclay and La Forge are temporarily knocked out by a nearby probe. Shortly thereafter, Barclay begins to act very strangely. For example, he makes a suggestion for repairing the telescope, the implementation of which only costs him a fraction of the time it would normally take. It turns out that Barclay mutates into a being far more evolved than humans. In the holodeck he creates a connection between his brain and the computer of the ship, which he controls with it. Among other things, he temporarily relocates the Enterprise with his new powers to a position in space 30,000 light-years away. Shortly afterwards, the crew is confronted with a representative of the Cytherians. He explains Barclay's transformation by stating that he studies other cultures by using the probe and using it to travel to their home in space. When Picard agrees to give the Cytherians information about his culture, the Cytherian being reverses Barclay's transformation.

Retired Starfleet Admiral Satie comes aboard to investigate an explosion that struck the Enterprise's warp drive. The Klingon exchange officer J'Dan is initially suspected, but he denies being responsible. Satie's companion, the Betazoid Sabin, suspects on the basis of his emotions received telepathically that the medical technician Simon Tarses, who has also been interrogated, has something to hide in relation to his partially Vulcan origin. This leads Satie to intend to interrogate Tarses as a suspect in the explosion, despite Picard's opposition due to a lack of evidence. Even after Data and La Forge were able to determine that the explosion was just a calamity and not an attack, Satie continues to pursue their intentions. She puts this into practice by ignoring Picard and continuing the indictment under the supervision of Starfleet Admiral Henry, who has been brought in. Picard's resistance to Satie's actions, which he judges as a court martial , leads to Picard being interrogated by Satie. When Picard tries to refute Satie's argument by referring to her father, Satie begins a wild tirade of abuse. This causes Henry to withdraw from the process, after which it is aborted.

But the experiment fails, the sun explodes. Continue its relevant research, it is impossible, however, because he will be 60 years old soon and therefore within the scope of kaelonischen tradition "resolution" of suicide to the kaelonischen children to spare commit has the burden of aging. Lwaxana Troi, who is also on board and proves to be a burden to the officers with her decidedly maternal behavior, is shocked by Timicin's plans. Referring to the Supreme Directive, Picard denies Lwaxana's request to intervene. When she falls in love with Timicin, she convinces him to change his mind; Timicin then requests asylum on the Enterprise, which the Kaelonians cannot accept. His daughter who came on board convinced him otherwise, much to Lwaxana's displeasure. Lwaxana finally accompanies him to the planet where he intends to commit suicide.

He is seriously injured when a spaceship attacks the shuttle in which he intends to visit one of the two moons. His body, it turns out, is a dying host that includes a symbiote . The host body dies and in order to save the symbiote, Riker voluntarily has it implanted. Crusher initially struggles to accept Odan as her lover in Riker's body. After the representatives of the moons have accepted Odan in Riker's body, Odan manages to settle the dispute in a marathon session. In doing so, however, Riker's body is severely weakened, so that Odan removes himself from it and has him transplanted into a newly arrived, but this time female, host. After changing the host again, Dr. Crusher takes an interest in Odan, who then leaves the ship.

While he is on vacation with his shuttle, La Forge is kidnapped and brainwashed by the Romulans, and they modify his visor. Meanwhile, the Enterprise is on the road with Klingon ambassador Kell to investigate Klingon Governor Vagh's allegation that Starfleet is supporting the Klingon rebels. Together with Data, La Forge, who has now returned to the Enterprise, finds out that Federation weapons, which Vagh had secured by the rebels, were manipulated with Romulan technology. Vagh sees his allegation confirmed when a container full of weapons is beamed from the Enterprise - which was carried out by La Forge without the knowledge of Picard and his followers. La Forge is also manipulated by Kell, who sympathizes with the Romulans. The aim of the Romulans with the manipulation is to drive a wedge between the Federation and the Klingon Empire for their own strategic advantage. Meanwhile, Data's analysis of unusual E-band emissions has shown that these emanate from La Forge and are used by the Romulans to communicate with La Forge. With this insight, Data can prevent La Forge from murdering Vagh at the last second.

Since Data has no experience of leading romantic relationships, he consults Guinan and senior officers one after the other. Data moves into D'Sora's quarters and also expresses emotions regarding relationship issues, for example by singing a song or - to strengthen the relationship - starting a marital quarrel. While the Enterprise flies through the fog, strange incidents take place: a planet disappears and suddenly reappears, furniture in the ship's rooms is suddenly deranged, and a crew member dies by being half trapped in the floor. Data and colleagues identify the cause of frequent spatial anomalies in the fog. In order to guide the Enterprise safely past the anomalies, Picard controls a shuttle as the vanguard . Just before the Enterprise leaves the fog, Picard can be beamed out of the exploding shuttle. Since D'Sora regrets having started another relationship with an unemotional man, she separates from Data.

The Enterprise is on its way to the Klingon home planet, where Picard will oversee the ceremony for the inauguration of Gowron as the new ruler. At the same time, Gowron asks Picard to help him put down a rebellion led by members of the Duras family against Gowron's enthronement. Picard refuses, however, so as not to drag the Federation into a Klingon civil war . Worf is refused by Gowron in his request to return his family honor that was revoked because Gowron fears the power of the Duras clan. The hitherto unknown Toral, son of Duras, claims the throne for himself, but this is denied to him by Picard because of Toral's lack of combat experience. While Worf is on Gowron's ship, it is attacked by ships of the Duras clan. When it is close to destruction, it is rescued by the ship from Kurn, Worf's brother. With the support of Kurn and his followers, Gowron is persuaded to return Worf's family honor. Gowron, now the new ruler, wants to get the Federation on his side in the fight against the Duras clan, and Worf wants to support him. Picard strictly rejects both, because of the latter, Worf finally leaves Starfleet. Meanwhile, a Romulan woman who closely resembles Tasha Yar and who intends to take action against Picard also attends a meeting of the Duras family. |
