Robert Legato
Robert "Rob" Legato (* 1956 ) is a VFX Supervisor who won an Oscar in 1998 for Titanic , 2012 for Hugo Cabret and 2017 for The Jungle Book .
Life
He grew up in Asbury Park , Monmouth County , New Jersey and went to Ocean Township High School . Robert Legato then completed a master's degree in cinematography at the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara , before becoming a VFX supervisor for an episode of the television series Twilight Zone in 1986 . From 1987 to 1992 he worked for the team that turned Starship Enterprise - The Next Century . He was responsible for the special effects in about half of the episodes . In 1993 he worked on the series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine before moving to the special effects company Digital Domain in 1994 . In 1996 he was VFX Supervisor for the cinematic implementation of the near-catastrophe of the Apollo 13 moon mission , for which he was nominated for an Oscar.
In 1997 the film Titanic followed , for which he received the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects in 1998 . Shortly thereafter, he moved from Digital Domain to Sony Pictures Imageworks . In 2004 he worked for the first time with Martin Scorsese on the production of the feature film Aviator . Another collaboration followed at Departed - Unter Feinden , the documentary Shine a Light and George Harrison: Living in the Material World . In 2012 he received his second Oscar for the film Hugo Cabret together with Joss Williams, Ben Grossmann, and Alex Henning . The third award followed in 2017.
In 2017 he made his directorial debut with the film The Eloise Asylum ( Eloise ). Before that, he had already worked as a director for television in the 1990s.
