Monmouth County [ ˈmɒnməθ ˈkaʊnti ] is a county in the US state of New Jersey . At the 2000 census , the county had 615,301 people and a population density of 503 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Freehold .

history

Monmouth County was established in 1683 as part of East Jersey Territory . On July 28, 1778, the Battle of Monmouth took place during the American War of Independence .

Historical objects

The historic Timothy Thomas Fortune House is in Red Bank . The house was the home of slave born journalist Timothy Thomas Fortune and is located at number 94 on West Bergen Place . The building was listed as a Historic Monument on December 8, 1976 by the National Register of Historic Places under number 76001171.
