Monmouth County [ ˈmɒnməθ ˈkaʊnti ] is a county in the US state of New Jersey . At the 2000 census , the county had 615,301 people and a population density of 503 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Freehold .

history

Monmouth County was established in 1683 as part of East Jersey Territory . On July 28, 1778, the Battle of Monmouth took place during the American War of Independence .

Historical objects

The historic Timothy Thomas Fortune House is in Red Bank . The house was the home of slave born journalist Timothy Thomas Fortune and is located at number 94 on West Bergen Place . The building was listed as a Historic Monument on December 8, 1976 by the National Register of Historic Places under number 76001171. In addition, it received an entry in the National Historic Landmark .

In addition to the Timothy Thomas Fortune House, nine other places in the county have the status of a National Historic Landmark . 104 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 16, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , the county had 615,301 people. There were 224,236 households and 160,328 families. The population density was 503 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 84.39% White, 8.06% African American, 0.14% Native American, 3.97% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, and 1.74% other races Groups; 1.68% were from two or more races. 6.20% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 224,236 households, 35.50% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 58.20% were married couples living together, 10.00% were single mothers. 28.50% were not families. 23.80% were single households and 9.60% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.70 and the average family size was 3.24.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.10% residents under 18 years of age, 6.90% between 18 and 24 years of age, 30.40% between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.10% between 45 and 64 years of age 12.50% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 94.40 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 90.90 males.
