Essex County is a county in the state of New Jersey . The county seat is Newark .
history
Essex County was established in 1683 as part of the East Jersey Territory .
Essex County has a National Historic Site , Thomas Edison National Historical Park . Two places in the county have National Historic Landmark status , John Ballantine House and Grace Church . 170 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 15, 2018).

The county covers an area of 336 square kilometers, of which 9 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Passaic County , Bergen County , Hudson County , Union County, and Morris County .

According to the 2000 census , the county had 793,633 people. There were 283,736 households and 193,507 families. The population density was 2,427 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 44.46% White, 41.24% African American, 0.23% Native American, 3.71% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, and 6.88% other races Groups; 3.42% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 15.42% of the population.
Of the 283,736 households, 33.80% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 42.30% were married couples living together, 20.40% were single mothers. 31.80% were not families. 26.70% were single households and 9.60% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.3 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.10% residents under 18 years of age, 9.40% between 18 and 24 years of age, 31.10% between 25 and 44 years of age, 21.50% between 45 and 64 years of age 11.90% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 90.70 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 86.40 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 44,944 , and the median income for a family is $ 54,818. Males had a median income of $ 41,374 versus $ 32,052 for females. The per capita income was $ 24,943. 15.60% of the population and 12.80% of families are below the poverty line. 20.50% of these were under 18 years of age and 12.20% were 65 years of age or older.
