Upsala College

East Orange Campus of 1893 by Scandinavian immigrants in New York founded and of the Swedish Lutheran Church (was since 1924 Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Augustana Synod in North America supported) Upsala College . The private college had up to 1,500 students in the 1930s and 1940s. From 1978 to 1992 there was another campus in Wantage Township in Sussex County . The rise in crime in the area around the campus in East Orange in the 1970s and 1980s had an impact on the number of well-to-do students, and the quality of the courses also fell. Financial problems led to the closure of the college on May 31, 1995. The campus area became the property of the city, which now uses the buildings in the eastern part for the East Orange Campus High School . Buildings in the western part of the site increasingly fell into disrepair and were largely demolished in 2006 in order to be able to use the site for residential development.
