Laura Bruce (born September 28, 1959 in East Orange , New Jersey ) is an American artist . She lives and works in Berlin .

Life

Laura Bruce studied painting at the State University of New York at New Paltz and sculpture at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. She was visiting professor at Exeter College of Art and Design, the Slade School of Fine Art in London, the Weissensee School of Art in Berlin and the Dresden University of Fine Arts . Bruce taught at the summer academies in Leipzig, Bremen and Dresden and in workshops at the Neo Rauch Graphics Foundation in Aschersleben. She also teaches art at the Otto Hahn School in Berlin.

She is the singer of the band Dangerpony. Dangerpony played live in Oslo, Norway in 2012 as part of the opening program of the exhibition I Wish I Was A Song at the Norwegian Museum of Contemporary Art together with Jan Köchermann & Doppelgenscher, Diamanda Galas and Killl .

Bruce has lived in Berlin since 1990.

Her work includes drawing , painting , sculpture , installation , video and performance . Large-format black and white graphite drawings are a crucial part of her work.

Her work is characterized by the tension between detailed hatching and soft, large areas of complex gray tones. Bruce's drawings are reminiscent of 19th century European neo-romanticism and the Hudson River School painting of the USA.

“A detailed analysis of the work shows that intuitive approaches and abstraction can be found on different levels: in relation to the material used, the representation - subtle hatching next to intense areas worked on with graphite pen and, even more, through the way in which the awareness of the place is internalized beyond mere description. While this results in a visual paradox, the viewer almost physically has a feeling of impermanence and a view of the landscape arises that extends in the direction of the phenomenologically inconceivable "

She often refers to historical references that she approaches from a contemporary perspective, for example in her installation Perpetual (79 drawings), which is based on Francisco de Goya's Los Capricios , which she presented for the first time in 2018 at Haus am Waldsee in Berlin issued. This is also the case in your drawing / sound installation Goodbye Is Half the Words You Know (2009–2013), in which Bruce presents 10 portraits of classic country singers and reinterprets their songs with her band Dangerpony. Part of this work was shown in 2016 in the exhibition Passion. - Fan Behavior and Art (curated by Christoph Tannert) exhibited in the Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin and in the Ludwig Museum Budapest . The installation was shown in full in the group exhibition I Wish This Was A Song (curated by Stina Högkvist and Sabrina van der Ley ) and in the Nasjonal Museet - Museum of Contemporary Art in Oslo in 2013 together with works by Dan Graham , Rodney Graham , Bruce Nauman , Libia Castro & Ólafur Ólafsson, Susan Philipsz , Adrian Piper , Santiago Reyes, Michael Sailstorfer , Wilhelm Sasnal , Félix González-Torres and others.

Works in public space

Laura Bruce's site-specific (10 × 6 m) wall drawing, De Septentrione ad Austrum (2015) is located in Aschersleben in the head building of the Bestehorn Park, realized in summer 2015 and officially handed over to the city of Aschersleben.
