Regional (Styria)

The regional is a biennial cultural festival in the Austrian state of Styria and took place in 2008, 2010 and 2012. It has replaced the Styrian state exhibitions . The focus is on events in a defined region that form a link between art and everyday life, use new spaces and work across disciplines. In October 2012 the discontinuation of the Styrian cultural festival regional was announced.

The regional08 was opened on July 4th, 2008 in Feldbach . The opening event of the regional10 took place on June 2nd, 2010 in Trieben . The regional12 was opened on June 22, 2012 in Murau .

The regional08 had a budget of 4 million euros. More than 49,000 visitors came. 83% of the visitors came from the region around Graz and from Styria, 17% from the Austrian federal states and abroad.

The artistic director was Dieter Spath. 130 events took place at 25 venues in southeast Styria in the districts of Feldbach , Fürstenfeld , Radkersburg , Hartberg and Weiz . The theme of the regional08 was "DIWAN - Borders and Congruences". With reference to the translation of the volume of poetry “Der Diwan” by the Persian mystic Hafis and “The History of the Ottoman Empire” by Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall , a diplomat and orientalist from this region, an attempt was made to understand the meaning of language and culture and perception depicting enemy images in the area of ​​tension between the Orient and the Occident .

The venues for the regional08 were Auersbach , Bertholdstein , Bad Gleichenberg , Fehring , Feldbach , Giesselsdorf , Gleisdorf , Gnas , Gosdorf , Ilz , Kalsdorf near Graz , Kirchbach , Klöch , Kornberg near Riegersburg , Laafeld , Leitersdorf , Mureck , Poppendorf , Radkersburg and the surrounding area, Riegersburg , Söchau and Straden , Walkersdorf. The opening ceremony took place in the Feldbacher Fleckviehhalle. Other historical venues were the tobacco hut in Ilz and Hainfeld Castle , the largest moated castle in Styria and the residence of Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall . The venue for the regional10 was the Liezen district . The motto of the festival was “In the middle on the edge”. Dietmar Seiler was appointed as artistic director, together with REX, the umbrella association of the district's cultural and media initiatives , who was head of dramaturgy and communication at the Theater am Neumarkt in Zurich until 2008 . As in 2008, the budget was 4 million euros. The program included, among other exhibitions in Admont ( "Play Admont") and the Universal Joanneum belonging Trautenfels Castle ( "The creative person - worlds of self / Fabricators of the World - Scenarios of Self-will").

The tendering process for the regional12 was launched in 2009. The venue for the regional12 was the Murau district . The motto was "Driftwood landscape in motion". The concept was based on the regional association Holzwelt Murau , which, as a strength of the area, should emphasize the interaction between the traditionally grown and the modern on the basis of the subject of wood, based on a district with 30,000 inhabitants and around 30 million coniferous and 300,000 deciduous trees. According to the application documents, this is “a diversity that arises not because of the publicity, but because the people want it.” Under the artistic direction of Maren Richter , the festival should “trace the phenomena that bring about the interactions between people, landscape and art ".

In the 31 days around 49,000 visitors came to the exhibitions. A total of 3000 Murauer, artists and contributors from 15 countries took part in the regional.
