Bertholdstein Castle is located in the village of Pertlstein , municipality of Fehring , in southeast Styria ( Austria ). The system stands on a knoll at a height of about 360 m, which slopes down to the east, west and north.
Bertholdstein Castle has one of the longest arcades in Central Europe.
history
Berthold I von Emmerberg founded the fortified castle between 1170 and 1179. He was Traungauer Ministeriale , Truchsess of Styria and received his clearing area in the Raab Valley between the princely towns of Feldbach and Fehring . In 1305 another Berthold von Emmerberg donated some goods to the parish of Fehring . After 1408, the Emmerberg family lost their property, as they stood in the Walsee feud against Duke Ernst . From around 1560 the descendants of Uhland I. von Falkenstein (Palatinate) took over the castle. Uhland Konrad I. von Falkenstein expanded the castle further. Then the Falkensteiner trail is lost.
From 1919 to 2008 the lap housed the St. Gabriel Benedictine monastery , which moved to St. Johann near Herberstein. Their residence with the originally Romanesque castle church of St. John the Baptist is now the Pertlstein benefice of the Fehring parish in the Feldbach dean's office .
The castle served as the backdrop for a film adaptation of Franz Kafka's novel Das Schloss .
