history

View of Ilz at sunset

Ilz was mentioned for the first time in a court document that Herbord von Fullnstein (Herbort von Füllenstein), headess of Bishop Bruno von Olmütz , issued on October 14, 1265 in Graz. A witness is named in it: Dominus Wernherus de Ylnz, probably the vicar of the place.

The economic conditions of the place were largely determined by the hop cultivation, which began at the end of the 18th century by the lords of Feistritz and Kalsdorf and was later taken up by the citizens of Ilz. In addition, the fruit growing in this area developed to great importance, the "Ilzer Weinler" bred here became one of the most popular apple varieties.

After the first hardship of the post-war years had been overcome, the municipality was able to set out to give the market a modern face with determined planning. At the same time, the renovation of the townscape was tackled. The construction of a secondary school, begun in 1947, was finally completed as one of the municipality's most important projects in the years 1957 to 1961 with the construction of the new secondary school. Ilz now has a kindergarten, elementary and secondary school with afternoon care and a music school. (As of March 2012)

In terms of space, Ilz has expanded considerably since 1945, especially to the west and north: Industry, trade, transport and agriculture are, as always, the economic basis of the place. But the face of the market has changed significantly over the past twenty years.

Lignite was mined in the Ilz area until 1964. In the 2012/13 school year, the Ilz secondary school became a new middle school.

The market town once operated a thermal bath project ("Steirertherme"), which was discontinued for financial reasons.

Buildings

Parish Church of St. James

The old church from the 12th or 13th century was replaced by a new building between 1653 and 1671 because it was dilapidated. From 1910 this was completely rebuilt and expanded according to plans by Johann Baltl (Graz city architect). The church is 41 m long, the nave 14 m wide. The priest's choir still consists of old buildings (1671).

In 1919/20 the church was repainted, designed by the school councilor Ludwig von Kurz zum Thurn and Goldenstein , executed by the brothers Johann, Alexander and Anton Walter from Ilz. In 1928 and 2004 the church got a new organ. In 1992 an interior renovation of the church took place, the redesign of the chancel was planned by the architects Hermann Eisenköck from Graz.

In 2010 the parish church received new bells, which were consecrated on September 19, 2010 by Diocesan Bishop Egon Kapellari .

Castles

  • The Feistritz Castle is located north of Ilz on the Feistritz . The residential tower was built around 1200. The castle was in dire straits in the 1980s. The castle has been renovated and adapted by the current owners since 1984.
  • Kalsdorf Castle is to the east of the village .

Museums

  • The Ilz Heimatmuseum was a school project (1982) combined with an exhibition. This gave the impetus for the establishment of the Ilz Local History Museum. According to the principle of “growing from below”, the farm building behind the town hall was renovated without an association, but with the help of the entire town and the community, a show tunnel was created by the local miners and a museum was set up, which was opened in 1991. With the main focus of the historical and cultural development of the Ilz market and its surroundings, the self-defined task is connected, above all, to be a museum for the own population.
  • The museum is complemented by the Ilz Museum Gallery, which regularly shows special exhibitions in two rooms of the town hall and makes its contribution to Ilz cultural life.

  • The annual market town festival takes place in September, and there is also an Ilzer market run.
  • Since December 1983, the "Theater in Ilz", an amateur theater group that emerged from the rural youth and led by its initiator Johann Prenner, has been showing sophisticated comedies, boulevard and theater classics at the end of each year. Thereby came u. a. Pieces by Johann Nestroy , Ferdinand Raimund or Ephraim Kishon for performance. The classics The Master Boxer or The Robbery of the Sabine Women , Boeing-Boeing and Neil Simons Barefoot in the Park were also on the program. Occasionally there was also enthusiastic reception at summer theater performances of The Little Prince or The Woman Devil .
