At the southwest cemetery

The southwest cemetery in the cadastral community of Hetzendorf consists of two parts, separated by Wundtgasse. The older part of the cemetery is on Hervicusgasse 44, the newer part on Wundtgasse 1a (until 2010 part of the Atzgersdorf cadastral community ). The cemetery covers a total of 241,828 m² with 25,671 grave sites. Each part of the cemetery contains its own mortuary, the interior of which was designed by Erich Boltenstern .

history

Since there was a great shortage of space in the cemeteries of the southwestern districts of Vienna 12-16, the community decided in 1919 to build a new cemetery and for this purpose acquired properties near the Hetzendorfer church and between the southern railway and the Rosenhügel water reservoir . The plans for the execution of the cemetery were made in 1920 by Karl Seidl. The cemetery district should include districts 12-16 and the cemetery should also serve as the main cemetery. In 1925, the jurisdiction of the southwest cemetery was limited to districts 12-15. The opening with the first burial took place on July 6, 1921.

In 1960, a war cemetery was created, with 403 war dead who had been buried in the garden of the Lainz retirement home being moved here. At the beginning of the 1960s, the cemetery was expanded to include the new part and, due to traffic requirements, it was divided by Wundtgasse. At the beginning of the 1970s, a separate mortuary was built in the new part.
