Erich Boltenstern (born June 21, 1896 in Vienna ; † June 9, 1991 there ) was an Austrian architect .
Live and act
After graduating from high school, Boltenstern did military service in the First World War and studied architecture in Vienna from 1919 to 1922. After graduating, he first went to Barcelona and then to Berlin to work with Hans Poelzig and Bruno Ahrends . In 1923/24 he worked with Alfred Keller in Barcelona before returning to Vienna in 1925 to gain further practice there in the shared office of Siegfried Theiss and Hans Jaksch .
Boltenstern, whose first buildings began around 1930, was assistant to Oskar Strnad at the School of Applied Arts from 1929 to 1934 and assistant to Clemens Holzmeister at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1934 to 1936 , where he led a master class for architecture until 1938. From 1938 to 1945, during the time of National Socialism , Boltenstern was considered “ Jewish misfits ” and had professional disadvantages.
After the Second World War he taught at the Faculty of Architecture at the Vienna University of Technology , where he held a full professorship from 1952 to 1968. After 1945 during the reconstruction in Vienna, Boltenstern was one of the busiest planners and represented the concept of a moderate modernity .
A special exhibition at the Wien Museum was dedicated to the time of Erich Boltenstern and his work in 2005/2006 .
Boltenstern is buried at the cemetery in Hinterbrühl , where he himself had previously designed the tombstone of his mother, the opera singer Louise Piwniczka . Erich Boltenstern junior (1926–2014) was also an architect of his sons , while Sven Boltenstern (1932–2019) made a name for himself as a goldsmith and sculptor .
