Stubenberg am See is a municipality in Styria , Austria , which is located in the Feistritz valley below the Kulm . It has 2198 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) and belongs to the judicial district of Fürstenfeld and the political district of Hartberg-Fürstenfeld . Stubenberg is a station on the Schlösserstraße and the Styrian Wine Route . The place , which was created in the 12th century, is known for its castle , the federal sports center Schloss Schielleiten and the Stubenbergsee , which was completed in 1971 and is used as a local recreation area for Graz and Vienna ; furthermore for its fortified castle complexes such as Herberstein Castle , Altschielleiten , Neuhaus Castle and the Herberstein Zoo .

Stubenberg is located in the Feistritz valley in the southeastern foothills of the Fischbach Alps at the foot of its local mountain, the Kulm ( 975  m above sea level ). The municipality is located at an altitude of 386 to 1282  m above sea level. A. Stubenberg is located in the Stubenberg Basin , which is two kilometers long and one kilometer wide and is laid out in a north-south direction. In the west it is bounded by the Kulm (975 m), in the north by the Rabenwald (1280 m), in the east by Tertiary Riedeln and in the south by the Buchberg (532 m). The "Stubenberg granite quarry" in the Freienberger Klamm, which was closed in 1986 and in which granite was quarried before 1821, is considered the place where the minerals corundum , spinel , zoisite and baddeleyite were found .

Flora and fauna

On the northward sloping slopes, larger mixed deciduous forests and spruce forests extend , while in the south-facing areas on shallow soils over gneiss , pine-pedunculate oak forests are predominant, in which the sweet chestnut ( Castanea sativa ) can be found regularly . An age of 1200 years is given for a sweet chestnut with a trunk circumference of 9 meters .

Prehistory and early history

So far, only a few ancient traces are known, especially Roman stones from Freienberg, at the Bachbauer, in Herberstein Castle and at the neighboring parish church of St. Johann bei Herberstein. A Roman stone from the Stubenberg rectory with the depiction of "Leda with a swan" is now in the Graz-Eggenberg Lapidarium. In the Stubenberg area, Roman grave mounds have recently been uncovered.

Medieval story

Apparently from Pitten . Originally Otto von Stubenberg had a castle built on the Kögerl above Stubenberg around 1160. His second son Ulrich fell as a participant in the Damiette crusade in 1218 near Damiette .

An Otto Capellanus de Stubenberch is mentioned for the first time in 1217 in the list of witnesses in a Stubenberg document.

As a measure against the uprising in 1269, Ottokar II. Přemysl had Stubenberg Castle destroyed along with numerous other castles in Styria.

For the year 1396, 42 farmers in the area of ​​the community of Stubenberg are listed by name.

As part of the Baumkirch feud , Stubenberg and Haßbach were stormed by imperial troops in 1470 and razed in 1474.

Recent history

On June 25, 1893, the Stubenberg volunteer fire department was founded under the direction of the senior teacher Johann Gartler .

The population for 1934 is given with 549 and for 1939 with 523 inhabitants.

During the Nazi era , Schielleiten Castle in Stubenberg was used as a Gauschule (sport).

On June 26, 1940, SS , NSRKB, Hitler Youth and BDM had to recite choirs in front of the local group leader Johann Postl in Stubenberg .

On November 1, 1944, between 12 noon and 1 p.m., aircraft coming from Pöllau and involved in an aerial battle with German fighters dropped 31 medium-weight bombs on Zeil-Stubenberg. Three buildings are seriously damaged, three are moderately severe and three are slightly damaged. On March 20, 1945, between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m., an American squadron with five bombers, which was approaching from Rabenwald-Pöllau, dropped two medium-weight bombs on Stubenberg. There was slight damage to the building and extensive glass and roof damage to some objects.

In 1971 the lake in Stubenberg was opened. The 40 hectare lake, which stretches from north to south over 1,000 m and from west to east over approx. 420 m, was created between 1968 and 1971 and fed by the water of the Feistritz .

From November 7th to 9th, 1977, an international symposium on “Healthcare in Rural Areas” took place in the Parkhotel in Stubenberg am See.

From May 3 to October 26, 1986, the state exhibition “Styria: Bridge and Bulwark” took place in Herberstein Castle near Stubenberg.

In 2003 the FPÖ politician Norbert Hofer fell with a paraglider in Stubenberg am See in Styria and sustained serious spinal injuries.

The seminar "Construction company management" took place from May 15 to 18, 2017 in Stubenberg.

Stubenberg has had a municipal coat of arms since January 1st, 1959. It was awarded by the Styrian state government on October 20, 1958. The Stubenberg coat of arms takes up the themes of the Stubenberg coat of arms , the noble family that named itself after the castle in the municipality. In the process, however, the state heraldist Reiner Puschnig reinterpreted the silver wolf tang as a fallen anchor (misinterpreted and), the silver-black background was replaced by the Styrian state color green and the stylized plait of Agnes von Stubenberg, which was pulled through the downward-facing ring, was replaced by a flying off on both sides made of silver rope.

Buildings

Stubenberg Castle, 2010

The Stubenberg Castle was built in a courtyard Meier from the 13th century in the 16th century on foundations. Initially belonging to the Lords of Stubenberg , it came into the possession of the Herbersteiners in 1632 and the Count Wurmbrand in the 19th century. Henriette Countess von Wurmbrand-Stuppach founded a monastery of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary in 1926, which existed until 1979. The complex has housed a castle hotel and a tavern since 2001 and has served as a cultural event location since 1981.

The parish church of St. Nikolaus was rebuilt from 1760 to 1766 under the master builder Josef Hueber and the interior was restored in 1972.

Altschielleiten Castle was built in the late 13th century by the Stubenberg family and lent to the Lords of Schielleiten (mentioned since 1328, died out around 1400). Lent to the Rindschaid ( Rindschait ) family from 1400 to 1629 , the castle was owned by the Counts of Saurau from 1629 to 1694. The Counts Wurmbrand-Stuppach owned the complex from 1694 to 1906 and from 1730 built the new Schielleiten Castle at the foot of the castle . With its completion, the castle was given up and was already described as a ruin around 1813. In the 20th century, it was the location of the castle festival in summer, but is now privately owned and cannot be visited.

The baroque Schielleiten Castle was built between 1720 and 1730 by the Counts Wurmbrand-Stuppach , who, however, took over financially during the construction, which is why only the middle risalit , the two wings and the western risalit were completed. After various changes of ownership from 1906 onwards, the system was sold to the Republic of Austria around 1935 . The possessions were handed over to the Austrian Gymnastics and Sports Front. The 43-hectare facility, which was expanded from 1960, has served as the national sports and leisure center Schielleiten since 1947. It has repeatedly hosted hot air balloon European and world championships.

Herberstein Castle, 2006

The oldest components of Herberstein Castle date from the end of the 13th century and were expanded to include a mighty outer bailey from 1400, which underwent several extensions in the 15th century and was redesigned with Renaissance elements from the mid-16th century and through in the 17th century a splendid knight's hall and a Florentine court expanded. In the 17th and 18th centuries, around a fifth of Styria belonged to the rule of the Herberstein counts. The facility, which is now owned by the Herberstein family, can be partially visited on guided tours.

Neuhaus Castle , built in the middle of the 14th century, was given to various families as fiefs by the Stubenbergers. After a fire in 1541 which also destroyed the archive, Sigmund Drachsler had the facility rebuilt. Due to a lightning strike around 1800, the castle was almost completely destroyed and fell into disrepair. It was not until 1982 that the Vetter von der Lilie family acquired the ruins and have been working on a reconstruction ever since. The third floor of the Palas is accessed by holiday apartments.

Museums

The Stubenberg an der Feistritz power plant is part of the Stubenbergklamm power plant , which was built in 1905 and completely renovated in 2015. The 2 Francis turbines of the diversion power plant work with an extension flow of 6.5 m³ / s and a head of 23 m and generate an output of 6,950,000 kWh.

The Stubenbergsee is an artificially created lake that is about 1000 m long from north to south and about 420 m wide from west to east. The lake, up to 8 m deep, to which fresh water is supplied by the Feistritz, has warmed up more and more in recent years, which is why a cooling system was installed. The builders involved in the construction of the lake (Stubenberg municipality under Mayor Peter Höfler and the hydraulic engineering department of the state government) as well as the hydraulic engineering department of the Styrian government were awarded the Austrian building owner award in 1971 .

The Herberstein Animal and Nature Park near Herberstein Castle is a 45 hectare zoo with 83 animal species and 722 individuals (as of 2015). Fallow deer were kept here for the first time in Austria as early as the 17th century . In connection with the Herberstein case , in which state funds were misused to the Herberstein zoo, the park has been managed by the Styrian Landestiergarten GmbH since 2006 .

The striking Rabenwaldkogel is at an altitude of 1280  m above sea level. A. the highest elevation of the Joglland in the Eastern Styrian hill country . Here are talc and Leukophyllit mined. It dominates the Stubenberg Basin and merges into the East Styrian Riedel landscape in the south .

The 4 km long Stubenberg Gorge, through which the Feistritz flows, ends at the end of Stubenberg. Neuhaus Castle was built above the gorge exit in the middle of the 14th century. The most visible landmark of the gorge is the distinctive "Geierwand".

The Kulm forms as Stubenberger local mountain with 976  m above sea level. A. the northern boundary of the parish. The distinctive conical shape of the mountain led to its ancient Slavic name * chlm . Numerous archaeological finds show that it was settled as early as the Copper Age , in the Urnfield Culture and during the Late Latène Period. In the open-air museum Kulm-Keltendorf the way of life and living situation of the Celts are presented. The Kulm is one of six locations in Austria that are temporarily used for mobile radar surveillance by the armed forces as part of the Goldhaube system.

Stubenberg is a tourist municipality that has over 150,000 overnight stays, mainly in the summer season, and also offers a popular day trip destination with the Stubenbergsee and Herberstein Castle . Stubenberg is connected to Wechsel Straße B 54 from Wiener Neustadt to Gleisdorf via Rabenwalderstraße L 432, junction from L 409 .
