history

The Stubenberg family built the castle in the late 13th century. Schielleiten, strategically located on a valley flank, had the task of repelling enemies from the east before they could reach Stubenberg Castle . The lords of Schielleiten, who have been mentioned since 1328, were in the feudal service of the Stubenbergs. Wulfing von Schielleiten died before 1400 as the last of his family. The castle was taken over from 1400 to 1629 by the Rindschaid (Rindschait), who also served the Stubenbergers.

Schielleiten Castle 1681

In 1629 the female heirs of the Rindschaid had to leave Styria because they were Protestants and Schielleiten was a center of Protestantism in Styria. They previously sold Schielleiten to the later governor Carl Graf Saurau . From 1629 to 1694 the castle was owned by Count Saurau, who sold it to Count Wurmbrand-Stuppach in 1694 . These were owned by the castle from 1694 to 1906, but began to rebuild Schielleiten Castle at the foot of the castle around 1730 . When it was completed, the old castle was abandoned. Due to the introduction of the roof tax , the roof was removed and all useful building materials were sold. In 1813 the building was already in ruins . Alt-Schielleiten, which remained in the ownership of the Wurmbrand family until 1905, is now privately owned.

architecture

The castle is surrounded by rectangular ring walls with square towers. The regular, rectangular structure can still be seen, as can the arcade courtyard , which is enclosed by four residential wings, and the square tower. The lack of natural protection was compensated for by a circular wall over five meters high and more than two meters thick. In this form, the castle was rebuilt as a Renaissance castle in the middle of the 16th century. The arcade courtyard was still clearly recognizable around 1930. The chapel, built in the 15th century, was also relatively well preserved at that time.

Recent past

Altschielleiten - inhabited part

For a long time, the ruin was the venue for the Castle Festival , a very popular summer night festival with a bar and popular music. A small, developed part of the ruin has been inhabited for a long time, but visits are not possible. The current owners are Josef Stelzer, former Mayor ( ÖVP ) of Stubenberg , and his sister Hermine Schreiner.
