history
Weiz was founded before 1188; at that time, the place and the Tabor Church were first mentioned as "Vides". Name research usually puts the name in Old Slavic * viděti and translates it with prospect, prospect or waiting.
Excerpt from Meyer's Konversations-Lexikon from 1888:
- “Weitz, a market town in Styria, on the local railway Gleisdorf-W, seat of a district administration and a district court, has an old church, manufacture of iron and steel goods, especially sickles, and (1880) 2648 inhabitants. It also has a gorge worth seeing, formed by the Weitzbach . "
In 1892 the local Franz Pichler founded the electrical machine company “F. Pichler Werke ”, later VA Tech Elin , which was taken over by Siemens in 2005 . In 2006 the generator production was sold on to Andritz AG due to antitrust concerns ; the production of large and distribution transformers is still part of Siemens AG Austria. During the First World War , the village received its own train station to facilitate the transport of armaments, which were mainly produced at the time due to the war.
Weiz has had town charter since 1932.
In 2019 Weiz received the "IMPULS Award" as the most innovative municipality in Austria.

Economy and Infrastructure
The history of Weiz as an important business location in the region began with the laying of the foundation stone for F. Pichler Werke in 1892. At that time, Weiz was actually of no interest as a factory location, as there was no large body of water to drive water mills , which were needed for mechanical production. Franz Pichler from Weizer did not only go down as an entrepreneur, but also as an inventor and pioneer in electrical power generation, as he also constructed AC power plants - the first of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. The rapidly growing company became a major manufacturer of electrical engineering, which made the place known as an industrial location and attracted more companies. During the First World War, the company had to manufacture armaments for the Austro-Hungarian army . To speed up and simplify transport, a train station was built in Weiz. As a side effect, this ensured that Weiz would remain an attractive company location in the future. From the F. Pichler works the ELIN AG for electrical industry emerged, which since 2005 belongs to the Siemens AG as part of the VA Tech Elin . The plant in Weiz, which still exists today and employs around 1,000 people, is part of the hydropower plant construction division, which Siemens had to sell on for antitrust reasons. Andritz AG has owned the plant in Weiz since 2006 .
As of the state of the population and workplace census by Statistics Austria in May 2001, 8,680 people were employed in the Weiz companies. This is a considerable number compared to the roughly equal population of the small town, which underlines the importance of Weiz as a business location.

traffic
- The Rechberg Straße B 64 runs through Weiz from Gleisdorf via Weiz to Frohnleiten and the Weizer Straße B 72 from Graz via Weiz to Krieglach .
- The passenger trains of the standard gauge Gleisdorf – Weiz ( ) regional railway stopped at two stations in Weiz: At the Weiz Interspar stop and at the Weiz Bahnhof station . The few hundred meters from the station Weiz terminus remote Weiz (until 2010 Weiz city ) was abandoned in July 2016th
- In the course of the current construction work for the new Weiz thoroughfare, the standard-gauge connecting railway to the former ELIN plant (now Siemens Transformers Austria and Andritz Hydro ) will be routed through Kapruner-Generator-Straße on a new track . The previous bus stop now serves as the Weiz Zentrum train stop . From Dr.-Karl-Widdmann-Strasse , the track structure was extended to the north to Roseggergasse , where the new Weiz Schulzentrum train stop was built (opposite the Weiz football stadium) .
- After the railway line in the section between the train station and the new terminus has gone into operation, the one in Weiz will have a total of four stops from September 2018. The extensive tracks of the Weiz train station will in future be limited in the eastern area by the new Weiz thoroughfare. In Weiz station, the regional railway to Gleisdorf meets the narrow-gauge Feistritztalbahn , which, in addition to freight trains to the talc plant in Oberfeistritz, is now mainly used for tourist steam-powered strolling trains.
- Soft mobility: Weiz is known as the city of short distances. Due to the topographical location and a size of around 5 km², it is ideal to walk and cycle in the extended urban area of 17 km². There are ten kilometers of cycle paths in the city. In most of the residential areas there is a 30 km / h restriction, here cyclists can ride with the car without any major problems. In order to promote cycling, cyclists are also allowed to use one-way streets in many one-way streets. The city has successfully participated in some EU projects such as VIANOVA and URBACT.

administration
The Weizer municipal administration and the mayor's office are located in the town hall. Because this is located on a hill at the western end of the main square and is therefore difficult to reach for wheelchair users , the Citizens Service was relocated from the town hall in October 2016 for reasons of accessibility and relocated to the ground floor of the Kunsthaus. A second service point with shorter opening times can be found in the former municipal office of the Krottendorf district, which was incorporated in 2015.
