The Weiz Volleyball Club , or VBC Weiz for short , is an Austrian volleyball club that is currently represented in the top Austrian division, the Austrian Volley League . There is also another men's team that plays in the second-rate 2nd Bundesliga South , one of two seasons running in parallel. There is also a women's team with games in the women's regional league , as well as various youth and children's teams.

history

The Weiz volleyball club was founded in 1979 as a hobby club and entered the championship two years later. Again two years later, in 1983, they were promoted to the national league, where they were represented until the end of the 1980s. At the same time, there was already a women's team that made it to the Styrian Cup final in 1988. The women's team itself started playing in 1st class in 1983. At the end of the 1980s, the men's and women's teams disbanded, with the volleyball section returning to its origins and continuing as a hobby club. A large hobby mixed tournament was held every year in the following years. After the championship operation was discontinued at the end of the 1980s and only existed on a hobby basis, those responsible at VBC Weiz concentrated increasingly on youth work in the following years. After around ten years as a hobby club, the men's team returned to the championship in the 1998/99 season and made it to the 1st Bundesliga, Austria's top division, in the 2003/04 season. However, the team could not hold up there long and was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga in 2004/05. After the team was still able to hold in this in the 2005/06 season, the further relegation to the regional league followed in 2006/07, in which they then competed from 2007/08. It was not until the 2010/11 season that the men's team was again represented in the 2. Bundesliga East and became champions of this league this season, as well as in the following 2011/12 season. In the 2012/13 season, VBC Weiz entered a syndicate with VC Gleisdorf and was thus represented in the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga. After just one year, the SG VBC Weiz / Gleisdorf was dissolved again; the league places in the two highest divisions in the country remained, however, the Weizern, who were henceforth represented by two teams.
