The Austrian Volley League is the top division in Austrian men's volleyball. The league has been held by the Austrian Volleyball Association (ÖVV) since 1972 . The record champions are the HotVolleys volleyball team with 18 titles .

Mode and Orientation

The league is in close cooperation with the Central European Volleyball League (MEVZA). The two best Austrian clubs play in the European league and only enter the Austrian Bundesliga in the Austrian Volley League of the best six teams.

The league is divided into four phases:

  • Basic round
  • Master playoff (knockout phase from quarter-finals)
  • U21 competition

Basic round

The maximum of ten participants, including two volleyball man sheep at the Central European Volleyball League (English Middle European Volleyball Zonal Association (MEVZA)) to participate, playing in a regular season in two round in a second round to the qualification play-off -Phase.

Master playoff

The quarter-finals and semi-finals take place in the best of five mode. The team with the better placement in the regular season has home rights in the first game, then it changes at every game. The final takes place in the best of seven mode and is otherwise the same as the quarter and semi-finals.

A special feature of the Austrian Volley League is that the losers in the quarter-finals play out places 5 to 8. The teams compete analogously to the semi-final pairings. The two series winners play for 5th place, while the losers battle for 7th place.

The losers of the semi-finals also duel for third place. All games for third to eighth place are played in best of three mode.

Relegation

Due to the small number of participants in the Austrian Volley League, no relegation has been held since 2016/17

U-21 competition

In the U-21 competition, each club has a team of players who are eligible to play for the U-21 national team and a maximum of two players who are up to 23 years old. The teams are divided into two groups, taking their geographic location into account. The group winners and the runners-up then play for victory in a final four tournament. This Final Four tournament usually takes place in the run-up to the Cup Final Four.

The preliminary round games are played as a preliminary game to the normal regular season games of the Bundesliga, with the U-21 teams of those teams that then play the Bundesliga game always playing. The games of the U-21 teams of the teams that compete at MEVZA are traditionally the preludes to the MEVZA basic round games.
