The Grasslhöhle in Eastern Styria is considered the oldest show cave in Austria . It is located on the south- eastern slope of the Sattelberg or Gösser , in Dürntal ( Naas municipality ) near Weiz . The Grasslhöhle has been known for its wealth of stalactites since 1816 . Some stalactites are up to 100,000 years old.

history

According to a legend , the cave was discovered by a shepherd boy who allegedly fell into the cave in search of a lost animal. It is not known exactly whether the boy survived.

The cave was then locked for a long time to protect it from looting and disfigurement. When Archduke Johann visited the cave in the 19th century, it began to be expanded and made accessible.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the first explorations of the cave were carried out. The first public tours of the cave began around 1924. The Hofers were important sponsors, builders and discoverers of new cave parts. From 1952, Hermann Hofer expanded the cave and began regular tours. The Reisinger family has been running the show cave business since 1970 .

The Grassl Cave is located in the Weizer Bergland area , where around 200 caves are currently known to be caves.

The Katerloch stalactite cave is located in the immediate vicinity of the Grassl cave .
