The Koppenbrüller cave is a show cave in the Koppentraun valley near Obertraun .
Surname
The cave is traversed by cave streams. After heavy rains, large amounts of water flow out of the cave, which create noises, the "roar", in the mountain. Koppen is the name of the area on the upper Lake Hallstatt, which the Koppentraun also bears.
history
During the time of Empress Maria Theresa , the Koppenbrüller cave is said to have served as a hiding place for the deserter Franz Engl from Hallstatt. His girlfriend, Hofer Sef, who provided him with food, fell fatally there. Then Franz inaugurated the pastor of Hallstatt. At the priest's request, Engl had been pardoned.
Since then the cave has been visited again and again. On August 4, 1910, it was opened as the first show cave in the Gmunden district.
The Dachstein researcher Friedrich Simony carried out scientific studies in the Koppenbrüller cave.
The Koppenbrüller cave became known through the discovery of the first blind cave beetle (Arctaphaenops angulipennis Meixner).
tourism
The Koppenbrüller cave is mentioned in a travel guide about the Salzkammergut from 1820 as the “famous show cave”. Presumably, even then, locals led tourists through the cave for a fee. The cave has been accessible since 1910 and guided tours take place regularly.
The cave can be visited in the summer months. Warm clothing and sturdy shoes with non-slip soles are recommended. It can be reached from the Salzkammergutbahn stop of the same name .
Nearby on the Schönbergalm are the Dachstein Mammoth Cave and Dachstein Giant Ice Cave , which can also be visited.
natural reserve
In Austria, caves are in principle (ex-lege) under strict nature protection. This cave was declared a natural monument in 1973 ( ND610 Koppenbrüller cave , nature conservation book: OÖ-65 / Obertraun). The area is located in the core zone of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Cultural Landscape Hallstatt – Dachstein / Salzkammergut ( WHS 806 ) and in the Dachstein European and nature reserve (bird protection and FFH area, AT3101000 / EU02 ; N098 ).
