The Kohlerhöhle ( cadastral no. 1833/1) is a layer joint cave with a length of around 650 meters (according to other information 1500 m). It is located on the western slope of the Großer Koller ( 1109  m ) at an altitude of around 700  m below the former Rußwurmalm in the municipality of Annaberg . The cave lies on the border between the hanging Gutenstein limestone and the lying plaster-bearing layers of Werfen and is one of the most important eastern Alpine gypsum caves .

The cave is designated as a natural monument and as a specially protected cave .

history

The time of the discovery of the cave is unknown, it was brought to speleological awareness by an article by R. Willner in 1928 in the Speleological Yearbook . The cave was made generally accessible by the local group Annaberg der Naturfreunde through the installation of paths and opened in 1930 as a show cave. Currently (as of 2017) no tours are offered.

Since January 10, 1951, the cave has been protected under the Natural Caves Act:

“The Kohlerhöhle represents an extensive layer joint cave, the upper parts of which lie in Gutenstein limestone, while the lower parts are embedded in plaster horizons. It is one of the most important East Alpine gypsum caves. Another special feature of the Kohlerhöhle are the partly blood-red colored “sintered flags”. The alternation of lime and plaster, the appearance of delicate plaster of paris needles and well-formed plaster crystals on the one hand, and the abundant occurrence of drip tubes, lime membranes and other sinter formations on the other hand, enter the cave special character and scientific significance, so that a public There is an interest in their preservation. "

fauna

The cave is zoologically significant because of its bats. There were the lesser horseshoe bat , the greater mouse-eared , the Barbastelle and the whiskered bat ( Myotis mystacinus Leisler encountered) in Fledermausberingungen.

In addition to the bats, the olive-brown cave moth ( Triphosa dubitata L. ) and the ragged owl ( Scoliopteryx libatrix ), as well as unspecified harvestmen, spiders and dipteras were found.
