The lesser whiskered bat is one of the smallest European mouse-eared species with a head-to-trunk length of about four centimeters, a wingspan of about 20 centimeters and a forearm length of 32 to 36.5 mm. Adult animals weigh four to seven grams. Small bearded bats are darkly colored, especially on the face, the fur is nut-brown to gray-brown on the upper side, the belly is gray. Ears, snout and membranes are black-brown. Overall, the whiskered bat looks very similar to the whiskered bat , the nymph bat and the steppe whiskered bat .

The whiskered bat is widespread in Europe. The distribution area extends from Morocco to Scotland and southern Scandinavia . The eastern limit of distribution is unknown due to confusion with the steppe whiskered bat, there is reliable evidence from the Caucasus and Israel .

Habitat and way of life

The whiskered bat is not as dependent on water and forests as its larger relative, the whiskered bat. It is also found in semi-open to open landscapes and in villages. Summer quarters are located in buildings as well as in other crevices, e.g. B. behind tree bark. Winter quarters are mainly in caves, tunnels and cellars. The lesser whiskered bat mostly hunts structurally at forest edges or along other vegetation. More open landscapes such as orchards or bodies of water are also used for hunting.

Danger

In Germany, the whiskered bat is on the red list . It is considered endangered and is a strictly protected FFH Annex IV Art . The species is particularly endangered by the destruction of its roosts, e.g. B. through building renovations. The IUCN classifies the species as not endangered ("least concern") due to its large distribution area.
