The Rettenwand Cave is located northwest of Kapfenberg , on Mariazeller Straße B20 to Thörl .

The first mention of the Rettenwand Cave comes from 1918. From 1923, research into the cave began. From the beginning of the development in 1923 until the opening in 1926, cave clay and rubble had to be removed from the cave in a long and arduous process in order to make it easier for visitors to enter. Bones, shards and bronze needles were found in the entrance area of the Rettenwand Cave, the oldest finds date from the Stone Age . They can be viewed in the special study collection of the Rettenwandhöhle protection association in the cultural center, city museum of Kapfenberg . The cave is particularly rich in stalactites and other forms of sinter, such as pearl sinter, grape sinter , nodule and button sinter .

The cave has been developed for tourism and is illuminated with electric lights on some stretches. It can be visited on Sundays and public holidays between May and September, accompanied by a tourist guide.
