The Entrische Kirche ( cadastral number 2595/2) is a show cave near Klammstein in the Gastein Valley ( Salzburg , Austria ). It is one of the most important caves on the edge of the Hohe Tauern and the largest natural cave in the Salzburg Central Alps . It has large halls and wonderful stalactite and sinter formations . The cave is over 2500 meters long, the temperature is always around 6 degrees Celsius. The cave name "Entrische Kirche" was first mentioned in 1428.

Research history and development

The "Entrische Kirche" ("entrisch": Salzburg dialect for "uncanny") is first mentioned in a document (already under this name ) in 1428 . Especially after 1528 and at the time of the Counter Reformation between 1700 and 1731, the Protestants used them for secret services and meetings.

The cave was first explored and measured in 1920 over a length of 50 meters. From 1962, today's leaseholder Richard Erlmoser continued to research and began, alone and on his own, with the tourist development of the cave (expansion into a show cave) and the creation of the access path. In the same year the discovery of the particularly beautiful upper floors of this karst cave was also successful.

Nature protection: European reserve Entrische Kirche

The Entrische Kirche has been a very popular winter home for various bat species for centuries. To protect the great mouse-eared mouse , the little horseshoe bat and the pug bat , the 6.39 ha area around the Entrische Kirche and Heidenkirche was declared a fauna-flora-habitat area in 2006 (AT3224000, ESG 00013 in the Sbg. Naturschutzbuch, LGBl. No. 128 / 2006).
